Bumper entry for TT tourney

NAIROBI, November 27 – Thirty seven teams have confirmed their participation in the National Bank Nairobi Table Tennis Open that starts on Friday at Arya Club.

Nairobi Table Tennis Association secretary general Mohamed Salat said on Thursday that 250 players will compete in five categories with the climax of the tournament taking place on Sunday.

“We have a corporate and open category for teams comprising of three players to take part in and then the individual and junior events in which under-17 and under- 14 players will compete,” said Salat.

Kenya number one Anthony Mathenge is favourite to clinch the individual title which has a cash prize of Sh15,000.

“Mathenge will feature in the individual as well as the doubles and team event for National Bank which is why they are favourites to win the team event,” added Salat.

National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Nakuru Municipality, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Arya Club, Kengen and Spikers are some of the teams who will be competing for the spoils over the weekend.

National Bank are sponsoring the tournament to the tune of Sh250,000 with Sh100,000 being used for cash prizes and running the tournament while 150,000 has been used to purchase the trophies and equipment.

Deputy Provincial Director of Sports Rachel Ngige said the banks involvement in the tourney is crucial towards the social development of the youth.

“Most of our youth are burdened by the stresses of life but it is a well known fact that sporting activities occupy those who are idle and will reduce the chances of them abusing substances,” said Ngige.

“I hope the Nairobi Table Tennis Association will use the sponsorship they have received as a chance to grow the sport particularly amongst the impoverished because it will address some of this country’s social problems,” she added.
