Ready for kick off

NAIROBI, October 9 – Reigning national sevens rugby champions Mwamba are the top seeds for Nakuru Prinsloo Sevens tournament that starts on Friday at the Nakuru Athletic Club.

Mwamba who boast an ensemble of national players are in Pool A together with United States International University (USIU), Moi University and Kenya Methodist University.

The Black shirts should cruise to the main cup quarter finals and their assault on the title will again revolve around pivot Lavin Asego and lanky centre Humphrey Khayange whose playmaking abilities out wide will serve the likes of his sibling Collins Injera and powerhouse winger Horace Otieno who have pace to burn.

Last year’s circuit runners up Impala will face Daystar, Nazarene and Rwandan side Remeral Buffaloes in Pool B.

Impala will be without flyhalf Peter Ocholla who is still recovering from an ankle injury but have adept personnel in the likes of stocky centre Moses Molwe, Moses Kola and veteran hooker Frank Ndong.

Apart from hosting the event, it will be interesting to see how Nakuru will perform at the tournament following their epic run in the Enterprise Cup and if they can replicate that form in the abbreviated version of the game.

Half back Gibson Weru will be keen on impressing the national selectors ahead of the Africa Zone Rugby World Cup Sevens qualifiers as he leads his side in Pool C against Jomo Kenyatta International University (JKUAT), Kabarak University and Eldoret Exiles.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) who have had a season to forget after losing the Kenya Cup and getting knocked out of the Enterprise Cup will want to make amends in Pool D when they line up against University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine, Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) and Maseno University.

KCB will be banking on the intellectual property of former national sevens and Impala coach Bill Githinji who took over at the Thika Road side earlier this year, while Machine will be looking towards national player Wilson K’Opondo to lead their charge.

Former Kenya sevens captain Paul Odera is another coach who will hope that his  previous experience in the national set up will come to the fore when his club Nondies who are in Pool E clash with Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad, Egerton and Catholic Universities.

The white shirts will also be relying on ace Biko Adema and Charles Kanyi to steer them and should have no problem reaching the main quarter finals.

Sidney Ashioya’s performance will be under a microscope when he lines up for Kenya Harlequins after a long injury layoff.

Quins are in Pool F, the toughest group of the tournament which features the Ugandan national side, Strathmore University and Mount Kenya University.

Masinde Muliro University and Nakuru II are on standby if any of the drawn teams fail to show up.
