Perfect start in Tunis

NAIROBI, October 31 – Kenya’s quest for a place in next year’s Rugby Sevens World Cup got off to a great start with victories over Namibia and Tunisia II in the Africa Zone Rugby World Cup Sevens qualifiers in Tunisia on Friday.

Gibson Weru marked his return to international sevens rugby with a try which helped beat Namibia 31-12.

Naftaly Bondo, Innocent Simiyu and Ben Nyambu also touched down for Kenya with Lavin Asego slotting over three conversions.

Earlier, Collins Injera scored a brace as Benjamin Ayimba’s put Tunisia II to the sword beating the second string side 46-0.

Horace Owiti, Simiyu, Weru and captain Humphrey Khayange also scored tries for Kenya.

Kenya who are now sure of making it to the semi finals of the tournament have a crunch encounter against arch rivals late on Friday evening and then complete their pool assignments against Senegal on Saturday.

Uganda destroyed Senegal 43-0 with Zimbabwe also registering the same scoreline against Zambia, while hosts Tunisia also blanked Botswana 26-0.

Late withdrawals from Cameroon and Nigeria forced the teams to be put in two pools of five, the top two sides in each pool progress to the semi finals, the two winners and third place team qualifying for the World Cup in Dubai next year.
