WASHINGTON, October 9 – Heard and seen on the campaign trail in the presidential race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain:
COMPLICATED CONNECTIONS
The McCain campaign published a list of 100 former ambassadors who are supporting his presidential campaign, including former Senate Majority Leader and White House Chief of Staff Howard Baker, President George H. W. Bush and former UN ambassador John Bolton. Second on the alphabetical list was Lenore Annenberg, a former US chief of protocol whose family funded the Chicago Annenberg Challenge,a school reform project on which Obama in 1995 worked alongside former Weather Underground activist William Ayers.
McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin, have branded Ayers a "domestic terrorist" and used Obama’s link to him to argue that Obama should not become president.
THAT ONE
Obama supporters were quick to jump on a remark by McCain during Tuesday’s presidential debate when the Republican, in a reference widely interpreted as dismissive, pointed at his rival and called him "that one" during a heated exchange.
Within hours, Obama supporters created a "Thatone08" group on social-networking website Facebook and began offering Thatone08 t-shirts for sale.
