11 more killed in road smash

NAROK, October 27 – Eleven people were killed after a matatu they were traveling in collided head on with a saloon car near Narok town late on Monday.

The passenger vehicle was ferrying passengers from Kisii to Nairobi when the accident occurred about six kilometers from Narok town, police said.

Narok divisional Police chief Patrick Wambani said five of the passengers were killed on the spot while six others died while undergoing treatment at the Narok North district hospital.

“Drivers of the two vehicles are among those who died. It was a terrible accident,” he said.

Mr Wambani said the saloon car that collided with the passenger vehicle operated taxi services in the town and was headed to Bomet at the time the accident occurred.

“Victims who sustained serious injuries have been admitted to the Kijabe and Tenwek Mission Hospitals for specialised treatment,” he added.

Road accidents have been on the increase in the recent past, with at least 10 people killed every week in various parts of the country.

Two weeks ago, 16 people were killed when a passenger bus rammed onto a matatu near Voi town, on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Twelve other people were killed in another accident that occurred on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, which records the highest number of accidents in the country-according to police statistics.
