NAIROBI, October 15 – At least three people were reported missing after floods swept across Mandera town on Tuesday night leaving over 1,800 families homeless.
The families were displaced after two seasonal rivers Laga and Dawa burst their banks, according to Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet.
“At least seven wells are submerged, three schools closed and an unknown number of goats missing. The Kenya Forest Service has lost over 15,000 seedlings due to the floods,” Mr Gullet said in a statement.
The schools affected are Barwaqo Primary, Boys Town Primary and Integrated Primary.
Two villages, Jamhuri and Bula Mpya are still submerged in the flood waters. Other villages affected by the heavy rains include Shafshafey, Central, Township, Kamor and Neboy.
The Kenya Red Cross is leading rescue operations and has already began distributing non-food items like blankets, mosquito nets and tents among others.
Mr Gullet also said the military is already on the ground and is distributing clean water to the displaced residents.
The Kenya Red Cross Mandera branch is assessing the situation and is already mobilising the residents to move out of the flood area to high grounds.
Mandera district has been receiving heavy rains for the last one week cutting off hundreds of residents.
