Kenya gets Sh50m for Tana routing

NAIROBI, October 13 – The United States has donated Sh50 million to the Kenyan Government for rerouting the Tana River to its original course, after it burst its banks recently depriving villages of water for irrigation.

Garsen Member of Parliament (MP) Danson Mungatana said Monday that the funds would be used to construct dykes along the river to prevent the banks from further collapse.

Mr Mungatana, who is also an Assistant Minister, called for patience from the communities’ residents as both governments worked out dates and modes of disbursement of the funds, which is still being carried out.

“Affected communities will continue receiving food aid as the exercise is being finalised,” the MP promised.

Mr Mungatana added that the government was also finalising the dumping of hard core materials on two sites along the River Tana, as a stop gap measure to the flooding.

More than 40,000 people along the Tana have been forced to go hungry for the past two months after the river’s banks were overwhelmed.

Meanwhile, security at the Kenya-Somalia border has been beefed up to counter any invasion by militiamen from Somalia.

Mandera East District Commissioner Francis Lenyagumi told the press in Mandera town that security personnel at the border had been increased over the past two months.

Lenyagumi added that peace had been restored in the volatile area and urged residents displaced by the fighting to return and continue with development activities.
