15 perish in road crash

WEBUYE, September 2 – Fifteen travellers were killed in a road accident that occurred in Webuye on Monday night.

Twenty four others were seriously wounded in the 8.30pm head-on collision involving two matatus, Western Provincial Police chief Francis Munyambu confirmed to Capital News.

Munyambu said the accident occurred when a matatu ferrying passengers to Webuye town hit a stationery tractor, a few kilometres from the Pan Paper Mill.

“The matatu then swerved to the other side of the road and collided head-on with an on-coming matatu,” he said.

One of the matatu drivers was among those killed while the other driver was hospitalised at the Webuye District Hospital together with other survivors.

Munyambu said the driver of the tractor was being held for questioning and was likely to appear in court to face relevant charges.

“He is to blame for this accident: He will be charged in court,” Munyambu said.

He said investigations had shown no road signs were used to alert other motorists that the tractor was stalled.

Mangled wreckages of the two vehicles were towed to the Webuye police station.
