One killed in Naivasha clashes

NAIVASHA, September 7 – One person has been killed and six others admitted to hospital after clashes over grazing land in the Mailla area of Naivasha on Saturday night.

The elderly man was burnt to death in his home as rival communities clashed over the land, according to the Rift Valley Provincial Police boss Joseph Ashimalla.

Two of those injured are being treated at Nairobi’s Kenyatta National Hospital with spear wounds, while another four are receiving treatment at a Naivasha hospital.

“Another three people who were hurt in the incident have since been treated and discharged,” Ashimalla told the media.

The police boss toured the area on Sunday with a host of top security officials from the region and assured anxious residents that security officers had been deployed to the area to monitor the situation and maintain law and order.

Elsewhere, armed raiders struck a village in Trans-Nzoia East district and killed two people before stealing 20 heads of cattle over the weekend.

The suspected Pokot raiders are said to have come through the notorious Kabolet forests. They shot severally in the air before driving away the animals.

Area Councillor Peter Kaburu said that the raiders, who numbered close to 30, were all armed with AK-47 rifles and passed before the Kabolet Anti-Stock Theft Unit before they drove off the herd.

The Sinyerere chief said that those killed were gunned down as they pursued the raiders.

Area District Commissioner Seif Matata, who confirmed the attack, said that they had managed to recover six of the stolen animals.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Kitale District Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.

Matata said that the police had launched a manhunt for the raiders and that more security personnel had been deployed in the area.

Kaburu however demanded that the officers at the Munyaka Anti-stock Theft Unit be moved, accusing them of failing to protect the locals.

On his part, local politician Moses Buyela said that the government should conduct a security operation in the area.
