NAIROBI, September 15 – Samwel Mushai Kimani won silver in the men’s 1500 metres T11 category at the Paralympics Games in Beijing on Monday.
Mushai clocked 4:11.76 to finish behind Zheng Zhang of China who won his second gold of the championships in a time of 4:10.05.
Bronze went to Jason Dunkerley of Canada in 4:12.53
In the men’s 800 metres T 46 class, Stephen Wambua Musyoki could only manage seventh place in a race won by Marcion Awizen of Poland.
Kenya has five gold medals after Henry Kiprono Kirwa added his third gold in the 10,000m T12 on Sunday.
Kirwa set a new Paralympics record of 31:42.97 minutes, two seconds ahead of Tunisian Abderrahim Zhiou who took silver.
The 35 year old athlete had won Kenya’s second gold last Thursday when he clinched the men’s 5,000 metres T 13 category.
He staged wonderful front running tactics in the last few laps to win and set a new world record of 14:24.02.
Double All Africa Games champion Abraham Tarbei opened Kenya’s gold account on Wednesday when set a new world record on his way to winning gold in the men’s 1500 metres T46 class.
The 21 year old athlete set a new world best time of 3:52.50 to win the race and gave Kenya her first gold medal of the Games.
Blind athlete Francis Thuo had won Kenya’s first medal at the games on Tuesday afternoon when he won silver in the men’s 5,000 metres T11 category.
Defending champion and World record holder Henry Wanyoike paid dearly for his early pacemaking duties and had to be content with bronze as China’s Zhen Zhang won gold in 15:27.35.
