Govt to train officers in community health

NAIROBI September 5 – The government has announced plans to train provincial health management teams beginning next week.

Public Health minister Beth Mugo said Friday that the training, which targets provincial health officers, was part of a series of flagship projects that the government had initiated towards improving health services at the community level across the country.

Mugo said the Public Health and Medical Services ministries had set aside Sh140 million in partnership with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, Swedish International Agency, Department for International Development and German Technical Cooperation to boost community health.

“The community strategy we are rolling out will guide us in delivering level-one services. We have developed implementation guidelines with the objective of guiding; which include outlining key messages, an essential care package and providing a framework for Community Based Information Systems,” Mugo said.

She spoke during a Community Health Strategy ceremony, where she flagged off 99 motorbikes to be used by Community Health Extension Workers in various parts of the country.  The workers will also get 240 bicycles and 230 health kits.

She said her ministry was targeting the distributing of 530 motorbikes plus 3,690 bicycles towards the community strategy project by the close of the year.

The minister has in the meantime disclosed plans to set up functional community units across the country vide developing and distributing training materials, referral guidelines, community based information systems and supervisory tools to all districts.

“We are confident that these officers working directly with the community will make a big difference in the delivery of health services to Kenyans,” she said.

The minister has reiterated the government’s commitment towards improving health services in the country and urged civilians to take responsibility of their own health.
