Golden Tarbei sets new world mark

NAIROBI, September 10 – Double All Africa Games champion Abraham Tarbei set a new world record on his way to winning gold in the men’s 1500 metres T46 class at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Beijing on Wednesday.

The 21 year old athlete set a new world best time of 3:52.50 to win the race and gave Kenya her first gold medal of the Games.

Tarbei stayed behind the leaders until the final 100 metres when he unleashed a strong finishing kick to win and continue his burgeoning reputation in the sport.

Tarbei completed an impressive double during the Paralympics event at the All Africa Games in July last year was declared the top sportsman in the special category in this year’s Safaricom Sportsman of the Year Awards (SOYA).
 
Ait Khamouch won silver in 3:53.46 while Samir Nouinoua won bronze while the other Kenyan in the race, Stephen Wambua Musyoki came in sixth in 3:57.21.

In the men’s 1500 metres T 13 category Henry Kirwa cruised to the final after winning his heat in 4:00.99.

Kirwa stayed behind the leaders for the first two laps before moving to the front at the bell. He then accelerated forward to win comfortably ahead of second placed Ignacio Avila who was second.

Thirty five year old Kirwa will attempt to win his first medal of the championships on Thursday morning when he lines up for the men’s 5,000 metres final in the T13 category.

Earlier Andrew Auma Adimo finished seventh in the men’s 400 metres T13 category final. Auma clocked 50.70 second sin a race won by Galano Luis Manule of Cuba in 49.12.

Kenya now has one gold, one silver and a bronze after five days of competition.
