Farmer wins Meru half marathon

NAIROBI, September 7 – Reuben Muriithi, a 25- year-old farmer, has won this year’s Safaricom Meru Half Marathon.

Muriithi triumphed in the men’s category of the 21-kilometre-race in one hour; 14 minutes and 36 seconds.

“I’m indeed delighted to win this marathon. I hope that from here, I will be able to get an opportunity to compete among the world’s best to prove my worth,” said the elated athlete.

He beat Peter Kinyua and Peter Mutembei who were the first and second runners-up; clocking one hour, 16 minutes and 46 seconds; and one hour, 21 minutes and nine seconds respectively.

The race was supervised by Robert Murithi Mtwamwari, the Athletics Kenya Eastern Province Assistant Secretary.
 
Meanwhile, Martha Mwari won the ladies 15 kilometres category after one hour and 57 minutes.

Catherine Karegi and Charity Kagwira finished first and second runners-up clocking one hour; and 58 minutes and two hours and 33 seconds respectively.

The Safaricom Meru Half Marathon, which is now in its third year; started and finished at Gitie Primary School.

In the boys five kilometres race; John Koome, Patrice Muriri and Festus Murangiri finished first, second and third respectively.

While in the girls’ category, Betty Karimi, Agnes Kagwiri and Beautice Kaigongi finished in the first three positions respectively.

The annual event is intended to give the local community an opportunity to compete and nurture athletics talent, organisers said Sunday.

The marathon has produced world champions including Stephen Kiogora, the Boston Marathon winner; and Timothy Kinoti, the Australian half marathon winner.

The race was planned by Gitie Focus Initiatives, a community-based organisation, which was registered in 2005.
