Confusion as NCC shuts Maasai Market

NAIROBI, September 2 – Confusion engulfed the popular Maasai Market Tuesday following an eviction notice issued by the Nairobi City Council (NCC).

The notice dated Thursday last week by the Director of Social Services and Housing, Saruni ole Kudate stated that the traders would no longer be operating from the premises along Slip Road, from where they have traded every Tuesday since 1994.

“We had been informed not to operate from today (Tuesday) and that the government would show us where to go. But the City Council is yet to come and show us where to go,” Joyce Ndung’u the traders’ spokesperson told Capital News.

The letter signed by Ole Kudate stated that the move was meant to pave way for the construction of a road by pass.

“The notice should have been for the whole year, not a one day notice. We are very important people in this country,” protested Rose Ndala, a trader.

“If we are sent away from here, we don’t know where else to go,” stated another trader.

“Let them show us where we will be operating from because we are here to earn a living.”

But when contacted, Ole Kudate declined to give any information and instead said “Let me consult with the Director of City Planning.”

The Maasai market, whose concept was borne in the early 1970s, has gained popularity since it moved to the present site in the 1990s. The Tuesday market now attracts tourists, local shoppers as well as exporters.
