Annan holds talks over Kreigler report

NAIROBI, September 20 – Visiting former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan held consultations Saturday with various stakeholders on the Kriegler report.

Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende who was the first to meet the diplomat urged Kenyans to heed Kriegler’s recommendations.

“As Kreigler said, unless we regard the recommendations of the report and among other reform the Electoral Commission of Kenya, what happened in 2007 and thereafter will be just like a Christmas party, and what we saw will be worse if we don’t take remedial measures,” he said.

Annan who has been holding meetings with different groups to discuss the progress of the various commissions’ established by the mediation team also met with representatives from the Civil Society.

Kenya National Human Rights Commission Chairperson Florence Jaoko also met Annan. She said they discussed the Kriegler report and agreed that implementation of its recommendations was vital in correcting and shaping future elections.

“We discussed the Kriegler report, the way forward and agenda four. In terms of recommendations, those are things that Kenyans have said over and over before, especially reconstruction of the ECK,” she said.

The Chairman of the Panel of Eminent African Personalities later met with representatives from faith based organisations.

 Annan is scheduled to meet the Justice Phillip Waki led committee of inquiry into the post election violence Sunday.
