MOMBASA, August 10 – Police in Mombasa have arrested yet another terror suspect believed to be an associate of the man most wanted for the 1998 bombings on US targets in East Africa, Fazul Abdullah Mohammed.
The suspect was arrested at the Old town late on Saturday.
Sources at the Anti-terrorism Police Unit confirmed the arrest and said that the man had already been flown to Nairobi for interrogation.
The man, who is a Mombasa businessman, was frog-marched home after he was nabbed, by a host of police officers who ransacked his house.
His wife told Capital News that the officers turned every room in the house upside down during their 11pm search, and made away with several documents, including her national identity card.
“When the policemen entered the house they whipped out their guns, but kept them after realising we were harmless people,” she said, while insisting that her husband was innocent.
Together with her mother-in-law, the wife claimed that the suspect had no links at all with terrorism.
The Police search is reported to have taken two hours, and among the items they carried with them were some CDs, a box with several items, cassettes and a passport.
The suspect was then instructed to append his signature against what had been taken before, they made their exit.
The arrest comes in the wake of an intensive search for Fazul, who escaped a police dragnet in Malindi one week ago.
Three family members were however arrested in that raid and have since been charged in court with aiding and abetting a criminal, with full knowledge of the crimes he is suspected of committing.
He is thought to be the mastermind of simultaneous bomb attacks on the US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on August 7, 1998.
Meanwhile, Police in Migori district have arrested an Italian catholic priest who shot at a man by mistake on Saturday.
The Migori CID boss Peter Kiboro said the Italian priest, who is based in Sori centre, was reportedly trying to shoot at a dog when he missed his target and shot a man instead, killing him instantly.
The priest was arrested on Sunday and was briefly held at the Sori police station before being transferred to Migori town.
Kiboro said they’ve taken the priest’s gun and are investigating the matter.
Without releasing details on the deceased, Kiboro announced that the priest would be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
