Rustlers kill 11 in Marsabit

MARSABIT, August 19 – Eleven people were killed and seven others seriously wounded when bandits raided a remote village in Marsabit early Tuesday morning.

The attackers drove away about 4500 herds of cattle during the 5am raid that occurred at Moite village in Laisamis division.

Area divisional Police chief Francis Sang’ said ten of those killed were herdsmen and residents who confronted the bandits to recover their animals.

“The raid occurred early in the morning when the attackers raided the village and stole animals after shooting at people,” Sang’ said.

He said the raiders were heavily armed at the time and shot haphazardly at residents who woke up to confront the raiders.

“We believe some of them escaped with bullet injuries because there was a gun battle with the residents here,” he said.

Sang’ said many of those wounded are in a serious condition and have been taken to hospital.

He said a security operation was underway in the region in search of the bandits and the stolen animals.

“We are pursuing them but so far no recovery has been made,’ he said adding that the raiders had escaped towards Turkana.
