JKUAT gets a new VC

NAIROBI, August 7 – Prof Mabel Imbuga is the new Vice Chancellor at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

She replaces Prof Nick Wanjohi, whose term ended on March 26, and will serve for the next five years.

Addressing the press at the Vice Chancellor’s office Thursday, the chairman of the University Council, Adan Mohamed, said that the new VC was appointed by President Kibaki on August 1.

Imbuga, who has been in acting capacity for the last four months, was until recently the deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Imbuga is a professor of Biochemistry and is remembered for successfully steering the Faculty of Science between 1999 and 2003 as a dean, for two terms.

She takes over a day after the students at the university went on rampage and were sent home indefinitely.

Confirming her appointment, the Chancellor of JKUAT Professor Ali Mazrui said this of her: "Prof Imbuga is a renowned scientist who has published widely in peer reviewed scientific journals and is a successful family person."

While accepting the appointment, she promised to work hard and take JKUAT to greater heights.

"I’m delighted and would wish to thank the President, the University Council and Senate for appointing me.  I will work hard to see to it that JKUAT achieves greater heights," she promised.
