Hunt for child molester heightened

MERU, August 21 – Police in Meru are looking for a 60-year old man who went into hiding after allegedly impregnating a 13-year old primary school pupil.

Officers said the class six girl at Mwithu Mwiru Primary School had been having an affair with the man.

It took the intervention of area residents to force the girl to reveal the man responsible for the pregnancy, since her father had attempted to protect the old man’s identity.

They then reported the matter to the local police station, but the elderly man went into hiding.

A local Non-Governmental Organisation, Ripples International, has now pledged to take the girl into protective custody, amid reports that her parents were trying to coerce her to change the story of who impregnated her.

The Manager of Ripples International Mercy Chidi told journalists that the girl’s parents were in cohorts with the alleged father of her unborn child and were exerting pressure on their daughter.

Chidi said the rescue centre was working closely with the local District Children’s Officer Jotham Kahihu to ensure the girl is safe following the turn of events.

“Placing the girl under the centre’s care would also give the police adequate time to apprehend the man behind the vice,” said Chidi.

Kahihu on his part decried the increasing cases of child abuse in the greater Meru region.

He said that over 608 cases of child abuse were reported in the area this month, while another 708 cases were recorded in July.
