COLORADO, August 27 – New York Senator Hillary Clinton took centre stage on the second day of the Democratic Party’s nominating convention and said she and her former rival Barack Obama’s were on the same team.
She received a rousing welcome from delegates in Denver, Colorado where the party hoped she could convince her followers to back Obama.
“Whether you voted for me or for Barrack, the time is now to unite as a single party with a single purpose,” said Clinton.
“We are all on the same team and none of us can afford to sit on the sidelines,” she added.
She thanked some 19 million voters who backed her during scathing primaries against Obama.
“I will always remember the single mom who adopted two kids with autism. She didn’t have any insurance and she discovered she had cancer, but she greeted me with her bald head painted with my name on it,” she reminisced.
Clinton wasted no time and plunged into an attack of Republican candidate John McCain before a cheering crowd that include her husband ex-president Bill and Obama’s wife Michelle.
“You haven’t worked so hard over the last 18 months or endured the last eight years to suffer through more failed leadership. No how, No way, No McCain!” she exclaimed.
Senator Obama will formally accept the party’s nomination Thursday night.
But the Republican Party was baying for blood and sniped that Clinton failed to say Obama was ready to be US commander-in-chief in her landmark convention speech.
"Senator Clinton ran her presidential campaign making clear that Barack Obama is not prepared to lead as commander in chief," Tucker Bounds, spokesman for Obama’s Republican rival John McCain, said in a statement.
"Nowhere tonight did she alter that assessment. Nowhere tonight did she say that Barack Obama is ready to lead. Millions of Hillary Clinton supporters and millions of Americans remain concerned about whether Barack Obama is ready to be president."
Clinton brought the house down in a show-stopping speech, where she threw her weight behind Obama who defeated her in the long primary season.
She urged all Americans to vote him into the White House.
"We don’t have a moment to lose, or a vote to spare. Nothing less than the fate of our nation and the future of our children hang in the balance," she said.
