Four more netted in Fazul hunt

NAIROBI, August 20 – Police on Wednesday arrested a city businessman and three of his family members as the hunt on terror suspect Fazul Abdulla Mohammed intensified.

The trader was arrested at about 4 am when police raided his palatial home in Nairobi’s Loresho estate.

Workers and guards at the home said the officers broke in and conducted a thorough search.

“There were more than 20 officers and all of them were armed. They stormed in and broke doors before they arrested them,” a guard at the home, who asked not to be named, said.

“We do not know why they arrested him. They (police) just took them away and upto now we do not know where they are,” another worker said.

A senior police officer said the four were being interrogated to help in the search for the fugitive.

The hunt for Fazul is concentrated in the coastal region, where at least ten people have been questioned.

A couple and their son who were among those arrested have since been charged in court for aiding the suspect.

Police maintain the suspect is in Kenya seeking treatment for a kidney ailment.

Two weeks ago, Police Spokesman Erick Kiraithe announced that ‘it is just a matter of time before he is caught’.

“We are doing our best and we hope to get him soon. It is just a matter of time,” he had said.

The terror suspect narrowly escaped a police dragnet earlier this month during a raid on one of the houses he is said to have been frequenting.

Fazul was indicted in the Southern District of New York, for his alleged involvement in the twin bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, on August 7, 1998.

The Rewards for Justice Program, United States Department of State, is offering a reward of up to US$5 million (Sh325 million) for information leading directly to the apprehension or conviction of the suspect.
