NAIROBI, August 16 – A section of education stakeholders want school boards to be empowered in the management of the institutions, as a mitigation measure to the recent students’ unrest.
Making submissions to the parliamentary committee on Education sitting in Kisumu on Saturday the stakeholders said that weak institutional management and inflexible secondary school curriculum were the main reasons for the spate of riots.
They noted that current the curriculum did not cater for the needs of weaker students in terms of addressing their talents.
They however suggested that the changes be implemented procedurally and with proper consultations arguing that frequent changes without proper consultations would build tension among teachers and students.
Close to 300 secondary schools went on strike last term in expression of their displeasure destroying property worth millions of shillings.
Led by Mosop Member of Parliament David Koech, the committee has been going round the country since last month collecting views from education stakeholders under the mandate of House Speaker Kenneth Marende.
In his parliamentary address education Minister Sam Ongeri had admitted that poor institutional mismanagement was one of the major causes of the strikes.
Ongeri announced that the government would be rolling out a new management manual for the administrators to avert the crisis. Deputy Director in charge of Curriculum at the Kenya Institute of Education, Laban Ayiro however told Capital news that the manuals are not a new thing and instead blamed school administrators for failing to take them seriously.
