290 City parking lots to be abolished

NAIROBI August 19 – The government has announced plans to abolish 290 parking bays within Nairobi City in the next six months, in order to create pathways for pedestrians and ease congestion, Metropolitan Development Minister Mutula Kilonzo revealed Tuesday.

The Minister, who spoke at the inauguration of a new board of the Nairobi Central Business District Association (NCBDA), said the move was part of government plans to address the plight of pedestrians in the City.

Kilonzo, however urged investors to venture into the parking business, revealing that his ministry in conjunction with those for Lands and Local Government had identified areas along Thika Road for the construction of “park-and-go” lots.

“The capacity of an ordinary car that parks in town is five people. Imagine 290 cars parked out there, it undermines business!” He exclaimed.

The Minister also said driving schools and taxis, which have been blamed for creating congestion in the city would be relocated to city suburbs to avert traffic.

Kilonzo further revealed: “We are hoping to introduce CCTVs when we clean the Nairobi River Basin so that we create walkways.”

In his remarks, incoming NCBDA Chairman Timothy Muriuki welcomed the abolition of the 14-seater mini buses within the CBD, but said more consultation was necessary to ensure a smooth transition.

He stated that NCBDA would market the Nairobi Metropolitan Infrastructure Bond due to be put into effect soon by the ministry.

He said the new board, comprising 16 members was committed to performing its duties as envisaged by NCBDA clarion call, ‘Improvement Through Action’.
