Tusker feted for lifting CECAFA Cup

NAIROBI July 31 – Tusker FC, New CECAFA Kagame Club Cup Champions celebrated their victory Thursday evening in Nairobi.

The victorious team arrived in the country on Wednesday evening to a low-key reception after a 17-hour journey by bus.

Tusker beat U.R.A (Uganda Revenue Authority) 2 -1 to lift the regional trophy. Martin Muwanga put the Ugandans in the lead in the 23rd minute after Joseph Shikokoti miscalculated a high ball.

Tusker came back from the breather stronger with Shikokoti heading home the equaliser in the 71st minute from an Osborne Monday corner.

Tusker were immediately handed a blow when Monday limped off, at a time when the side had already made the maximum three changes.

Playing a man less, Tusker played with more vigour remaining on top against a side that should have taken charge of the game.

URA’s fate was sealed in the 88th minute when Kadenge made use of John Keo’s pass to beat Dhaira Abbey in the URA goal.

Tusker coach Jacob Mulee said he was happy to have won the match he described as ‘very difficult’.

“I made three quick changes for the second half. It was a major risk but I am happy it paid off, even if we ended up playing the last 15 minutes a man less,” he said.

“My boys promised me the Cup and I am happy they have delivered it.”

Simba of Tanzania was declared third place after their traditional rivals Yanga failed to turn up for the play off.

For winning the Cup, Tusker also received Sh1, 980,000 (US$30,000) while URA pocketed with Sh1, 320,000 (US$20,000).
