Stars up against the Flames

NAIROBI, July 1 – The national football team Harambee Stars will play Malawi Flames in a friendly match on July 7.

The match, which will be played in Blantyre, will be part of Malawi’s Independence Day celebrations.

Coach Francis Kimanzi has picked an almost fully local based squad for the assignment as he seeks to give his local players exposure ahead of the remaining World Cup qualifying matches against Namibia and Guinea.

Five new players have been included in the team including Jockins Atudo, Francis Chinjili, Augustine Etemesi, Anthony Dafaa and Joseph Njuguna.

There is however room for two United Arab Emirates’ based players in Kevin Ochieng and Osborne Monday.

Kenya Football Federation chairman Mohammed Hatimy said their Malawian counterparts had extended an all expenses paid invitation to the national team, “We thought it would be a good idea to play Malawi who are doing well in the qualifiers and see how our boys fare.”

As a result of the match, there will be no Kenya Premier League matches this weekend.

Malawi are currently third in group 12 of the World Cup qualifying campaign with six points including a shock win over defending champions Egypt. They play away to Djibouti before taking on Democratic Republic of Congo in their final group game.

On their part, Stars take on Namibia in Nairobi in September in their penultimate qualifying match before travelling to Guinea for their final match in October. Stars currently lie second in group two with seven points having won two games, drawn one and lost one.

SQUAD: Noah Ayuko, Jackton Odhiambo, Antony Kimani, Edgar Ochieng, Joseph Shikokoti, Lloyd Wahome, John Njoroge, Jockins Atudo, Austin Makacha, Osborne Monday, Andrew Oyombe, Levy Muaka, Kevin Ochieng, Francis Chinjili, Francis Ouma, Joseph Njuguna, Augustine Etemesi and Antony Dafaa.
