PNU disunity still unresolved

NAIROBI, July 28 – Acrimony within the Party of National Unity (PNU) seemed unresolved on Monday after leaders of affiliate parties gave out mixed signals, after a two-hour convergence chaired by President Mwai Kibaki.

After the meeting that ended shortly before 7pm, Justice Minister Martha Karua raised the three finger Narc Kenya sign to show that she was still in that party.

Cabinet Minister Noah Wekesa’s comments to the press over the meeting were constantly interrupted by apparent confusion amongst the leaders present.

As journalists rushed between Karua and Wekesa to get their comments on the meeting, Karua said: “Don’t be misled, I am still in Narc Kenya.”

“These people have a tendency of misleading you,” she went on, forcing Wekesa to wait for her to leave before continuing with his address.

The meeting was aimed at encouraging the leaders to dissolve their parties and come together under PNU.

Wekesa said that the party leaders present; Musikari Kombo representing Ford Kenya, Marsden Madoka for KANU, Ali Chirau Mwakwere of the Shirikisho party and Professor George Saitoti among others, only agreed to table a report of the 15 member committee looking into the membership issue, to party leaders early next week.

Wekesa said the leaders would then make a decision on the affiliate parties’ membership.

He explained that the report could not be tabled on Monday because some of the party leaders were absent.

“The report of 15 political parties would be tabled to the same group, for adoption or rejection,” he said, at the same time emphasising that Monday’s meeting was ‘very frank and focused’.

The 15-member team was set up two weeks ago to decide on the whether to have individual or corporate membership within PNU.

However, some party leaders have openly said they would not abandon their parties, intensifying divisions within PNU.

Next week’s meeting could determine the future of PNU, whether it will stand alone as a party, or a party made of parties.
