Minister attacked by gangsters

NAIROBI, July 19 – Finance Assistant Minister Oburu Odinga escaped death narrowly outside his Kisumu residence after armed gangsters attacked him on Friday night.

The Bondo MP escaped unhurt but his driver sustained a slight head injury in the midnight incident in Moscow estate.

The thugs emerged from a dark alley and smashed the windscreen of their car as he entered his compound.

“I was waylaid by the gang that was armed with a pistol and crude weapons as my driver waited for the guard to open the gate to my compound,” he told journalists.

Oburu said the gang took off with over Sh100,000 and other personal effects.

“My driver suffered cuts after the gang smashed the windscreen during the scuffle,” he said.

Oburu narrated that the police took long to reach the scene and called for improvement in security in the lakeside town.

“Police should now beef up security here by intensifying night patrols,” he said.

The Assistant Minister did not have a bodyguard when the incident occurred.
