Football starlets set for Brazil tour

NAIROBI, July 1 – Six secondary school students will attend the 2008 Coca-Cola International Football Camp in Brazil.

The six – five boys and a girl were selected during the Copa Coca Cola junior football schools’ championships will leave for Brazil on Saturday.

Vivian Achieng’ of Butere Girls is the only girl in the group that also includes Simon Maina  of Wareng’ High School  Eldoret, David Gateri of Langata High School Nairobi ,James Gideon of  Mivumoni High School in Mombasa, Paul Mbugua  of Kagumo Boys High School, Nyeri and Zach Omote of Kisii High School.

“It’s a good opportunity and a privileged to be selected. I have played football since I was very young and finally it has paid off,” said Omote.

“I am so happy because it is the chance of a lifetime. I can’t really express how I feel,” said Maina who idolizes Robin van Persie.

The sextet were chosen through a structured process through the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA)  criterion for Most Valuable Player / Man or Woman of the Match which was overseen by top Kenyan football personalities.

This year’s camp will bring together 312 children aged between 12 and 15 years from 25 countries.

While at the camp which in Rio de Janeiro, the students will undergo a one-week training stint in the renowned school of excellence in Rio.

The Brazilian Ambassador to Kenya, Ana Maria Sampaio Fernandez organized a reception in their honour on the July 1st at her residence.

This year’s Copa Coca-Cola Junior Schools Football Championships came to an end after two months of grueling matches played in six Coca-Cola bottler regions in the country.

This is the third year running that Coca-Cola East & Central Africa Ltd has sponsored these championships. Copa Coca-Cola is played as a nation-wide 7 a side soccer tournament that is endorsed and sanctioned by the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA).

According to Coca-Cola’s Strategic Marketing Manager Judy Kairo, “The Coca- Cola Company is happy to have sponsored this year’s Copa Coca-Cola School championship games which saw the discovery of raw talent that lies within the boundaries of our great county.”

She further added, “the discovery of these six young players shows that football in Kenya can only grow, bearing in mind that there’s still a lot more talent that is yet to be discovered.”
