Five people killed by cattle rustlers

NAIROBI, July 16 – Five people were killed and more than 200 animals stolen when cattle rustlers raided a village in Samburu district on Wednesday.

Six other people including a police officer were also wounded during the attack that occurred at Soito-Kokoyo village, about 10 kilometres from Baragoi trading centre.

“Five people were killed and some others wounded during the attack. Those wounded are in a stable condition,” said Samburu divisional Police chief Amos Owang.

“We are pursuing the raiders, we have deployed officers to pursue them but no arrest or recovery has been made yet.”

He said officers were pursuing the raiders who are said to have escaped towards Suguta Valley.

Those wounded during the morning attack were admitted to the Samburu district hospital.

The incident occurred when armed rustlers raided the remote village and opened fire at residents.

They then drove off the animals.

When police officers confronted them, they engaged them in a shoot-out and managed to escape.

It is understood that police were overpowered.

Cattle rustling incidents have been rampant in the district.
