ODM snaps up Ainamoi and Wajir North

NAIROBI, June 12 – The Orange Democratic Movement has retained its hold on Ainamoi constituency after a neck and neck race between the party’s candidate Benjamin Langat and Paul Chepkwony of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

Presiding officer Humphrey Rono announced that Langat had secured the seat with 17,532 votes, followed by 15,689 votes garnered by Chepkwony.

“Chepkwony Paul Kiprono from UDM garnered 15,689, while Langat Benjamin Kipkirui from ODM got 17,532,” Rono announced amid cheers from the ODM candidate’s supporters.

“If you’ve been adding and you think I’ve made a mistake, I’m ready to be corrected,” he added.

According to our reporter at the scene, George Munyori, voter turnout was pegged at close to 50%.

“The total number of voters were 24,849.”

Voting went on largely without incident in Ainamoi. Polling started on time, 6am sharp, and ended shortly after 5pm.

The seat was left vacant after the death of the former Member of Parliament (MP) David Kimutai Too in January.

He was murdered by a police officer in what was largely suspected to be a love-triangle gone sour.

Ainamoi is one of five constituencies where by-elections were held on Wednesday, the others being Emuhaya, Kilgoris, Embakasi and Wajir North.

Meanwhile, ODM has also emerged victorious in Wajir North, where its candidate Mohammed Gabow garnered 5,645 votes, beating his closest rival, KANU’s Dr Ali Abdillahi, who had 4,716 votes.

Previous elections in the constituency on December 27 were cancelled due to massive irregularities.
