Ndereba to compete in London

NAIROBI, June 26 – Two time World Marathon champion Catherine Ndereba will compete at the 8th annual British 10k London Run on July 6.

Italy’s Olympic Marathon champion Stefano Baldini will also compete in the race just four weeks before they contest the Olympic marathons in Beijing, China.

Ndereba, who was a silver medallist at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, will be joined by the Netherlands’ Lornah Kiplagat, the reigning double World Road Running champion and World record holder for 20km and Half Marathon who intends to run the 10,000m in Beijing.

Baldini, who is also European champion at the marathon, has had a spate of injury problems in the last two years and finished 12th in this year’s London Marathon, while Ndereda is a two-time World champion (2003 / 2007) and was fifth last autumn in New York which was her last marathon.

Ndereba has a 10km road PB of 31:04 (2001) and Lornah Kiplagat 30:32 (2002); Baldini’s PB for 10km is 28:10 (2002).

The Asics British 10k London Run is run over much of the proposed London 2012 Olympic Marathon course. Over 26,000 participants will take to the streets of central London watched by thousands of spectators through the heart of the British capital.

The first woman to run under 2:19 and the first African woman to win the Marathon at the World Championships (2003), Ndereba will be going for the only medal still missing from her stellar collection in Beijing.

Ndereba became first woman to win the Boston Marathon a record four times, and is also a double Chicago Marathon winner. With two second-place finishes in the New York City Marathon, and a runner-up spot in the London Marathon, only the Berlin Marathon in the WMM series has yet to experience her brilliance.

Twice Kenya’s sportswoman of the year, and with 15 Half-Marathon wins and 17 podium finishes out of 18 marathon starts, the deeply spiritual Ndereba can claim to be the most dominant figure in women’s marathon running.

She has failed to finished on the podium only twice in her marathon career- in Boston 1999, when she was 6th, and in New York last year where she was fifth.
