Coalition intact despite by elections, VP says

NAIROBI, June 12 – Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka Thursday said the outcome of the Wednesday’s by-elections will not affect the unity of the grand coalition government.

Musyoka noted that Kenyans had learned from the post-election skirmishes and were determined to support the Grand Coalition Government as one way of ensuring the country’s peace and stability.

“Kenyans will not allow the by-election results to retard the progress we have made so far,” Musyoka pointed out, adding that the leaders had resolved to preach peace and unity amongst Kenyans, and desist from dividing them.

He made the remarks when he received a German Member of the European Parliament Dr Horst Posdorf, who paid him a courtesy call in his Jogoo House office.

He expressed optimism that the coalition will not only succeed, but will also create the necessary environment for the country’s prosperity, saying it had already overcome its initial teething problems.

The Vice President hailed the cordial relations existing between Kenya and Germany observing that it’s from the latter that the coalition style of government was borrowed.

Dr Posdorf who also served as a member of the European Union Observation Mission during the last general elections, commended Kenyan leaders for agreeing to work together in a coalition following the political differences.

Dr Posdorf appealed to the country’s leaders to ensure that the existing peace and stability are nurtured and sustained, saying that Kenya was respected as an important player internationally.
