120 suspects arrested for lynching witches

NAIROBI, May 29 – At least 120 suspects have been arrested in Kisii over the lynching of 11 residents, mainly elderly women, whom they accused of engaging in witchcraft, a police official said Wednesday.

"The operation is very successful and will go on until all the suspects are arrested. They are being interrogated before they are taken to court to face a series of charges," Nyanza province police chief Antony Kibuchi said.

Many of them will face murder charges, which carries a mandatory death sentence, he added.

A mob last week tied up eight women and three men many of them aged between 70 and 90 years, and set them on fire in Nyakeo village some 300 kilometres west of the capital Nairobi.

Kibuchi warned members of the public against taking the law into their hands and appealed to them to instead report criminal matters to the police.
