NAIROBI, May 25 – President Mwai Kibaki is expected to join other Heads of State and Government attending a four-day international conference on African Development in Tokyo Japan, dubbed Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development (TICAD).
The President left the country Sunday morning for Yokohama, Japan for a four-day official visit in which he is also expected to hold bilateral talks with Japanese officials.
According to a statement by Presidential Press Service (PPS), the conference seeks to strengthen recent positive trends in Africa in both political and economic areas.
In the statement, PPS said deliberations at the conference will be centred on the theme, “Towards a Vibrant Africa: A Continent of Hope and Opportunity.”
It adds that key issues that are expected to attract main focus will include boosting economic growth by strengthening support in order to make economic growth in Africa self-sustaining.
“Other issues include achievement of Millennium Development Goals to consolidate peace and guarantee human security as well strengthening the capacity of African countries to effectively respond to global environmental issues such as global warming and climate change,” the statement said.
Japan is seeking to support Africa in various sectors such as infrastructure targeting mainly regional road networks and electric power, small and medium enterprises, tourism promotion, agriculture, health and education through expansion of school for all projects.
Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka led senior Government officials who included the Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Ambassador Francis Muthaura among others to see off the President at the airport.
