NAIROBI, May 8- Medical Services Minister Professor Anyang Nyongo was Thursday sworn into office.
President Mwai Kibaki witnessed the swearing-in ceremony at his Harambee House Office, which was conducted by the Head Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Ambassador Francis Muthaura.
Professor Nyong’o was appointed the Minister for Medical Services during the formation of the Grand Coalition Government but was outside the country when the swearing-in of other ministers was conducted last month.
The President asked Nyongo to rededicate himself in the service to the Kenyan people and expressed confidence that the minister was equal to the huge task ahead of him.
The President noted that the Ministry of Medical Services was a key pillar to the nation’s development, saying that a healthy citizenry was a critical ingredient of a successful working nation.
On Wednesday, The Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende barred the Minister from answering questions in Parliament, which was directed to his ministry because he had not taken oath of office as a Cabinet Minister.
He is expected to answer the question on Tuesday.
During the ceremony the minister was accompanied by his wife, Dorothy Nyongo and the Permanent Secretary for Medical Services, Dr Hezron Nyangito.
Nyongo later met with representatives of nurses who had threatened to go on strike demanding better remuneration and working conditions.
