4×4 driving skills, stamina, mechanical aptitude, teamwork ability and outdoor survival skills was the agenda in the Boot Camp and they were all put through the paces.

Hundreds of passionate off-roaders entered for a chance to take part in the Ford Ranger Odyssey but only 17 finalists were chosen for further testing based on their technical experience and skill and who survived the Ford’s 4×4 “Boot Camp”.

What the Boot Camp did was to put the diverse group of competitors through their paces on a wide range of challenges.

The level of enthusiasm and commitment throughout the four days of competition was truly electric.
THE ODYSSEY

Kenya will be the starting point of the 21-day Odyssey on the 24^th June 2013 that will see the Ford Ranger put through the test in the most demanding, back braking challenge ever seeing on African soil.  It’s an 8000km expedition and the competitors will travel through Tanzania, Zanzibar, Mozambique and Zimbabwe with the final leg in South Africa on July 14 2013.

The ultimate prize will be a fully accessorized Ford Ranger.

All the drivers and the 8 Ford Rangers will arrive in Kenya on the 21^st June.

Ford Odyssey 4X4 challenge will have a fun day out on the 22^nd June at Stoni Athi where you will get a chance to experience the Ford Ranger T6.

• In the evening, entertainment will be provided by  Dj Adrian and Dj Klash.
• Party in the wilderness -with lots of drinks and food.
• A designated area of camping wil be provided please carry your own camping gear.
• There will be a kids playing area during the day (with clown, face painters, bouncing castle) FREE FOR ALL KIDS.
• On the 23^rd June – flag off the Ford Ranger Odyssey convoy at 9am from Stoni Athi.
• Then a CSR activity in Amboseli by 2.30pm and then to enter Amboseli Park by 4.30pm.

THE DRIVERS
2013 Ford Ranger Odyssey Africa finalists:

Alex Cruickshanks (28), from Randpark Ridge, is a management consultant by day but clearly used his sporting ability as a multiple SA rowing champion to his advantage to secure his spot on the main event. “Driving through Africa has always been a dream of mine. This is a great opportunity to live the dream” he says.

Bernard Hollander (21) is an industrial psychology student from Pretoria and exploited his youthful exuberance to full effect:. “I’m here to win the awesome Ford Ranger and to gain experience traveling through Africa.”

IT technician Richard Rammoneng (32) is passionate about off-roading. “Competing in the Ranger Odyssey will be a dream come true.”

Kugesh Reddy (30) is a banking professional from Sunninghill. “I’m looking forward to experiencing Africa and the ultimate test of man and machine.”

As a commercial diver, Ryno Swart (30) from Roodepoort has physical endurance on his side. “I’m an adventure freak and I love being outdoors,” he says. “Aside from travelling through Africa, I have one goal and that is to win the awesome Ford Ranger.”

Wisaal Anderson (31) lives in Johannesburg and is a lifestyle blogger. “My aim is to have fun and experience new things,” she says. “I have a reputation as a pampered princess, and I hope to change that perception on the Ranger Odyssey.”

Paula Smith (37) from Durbanville is an accountant and mother of three. “I’ve been dreaming about travelling through Africa since I was 12 and can’t wait to fulfil that dream.”

Dania Petrik (29) from Hout Bay has just completed her master’s on sustainable development and had her first taste of Africa in 2012 while doing research. “I absolutely loved the experience and when I saw the Ranger Odyssey there wasn’t a chance that I would miss this amazing opportunity.”

Donatella d’Aloisio (33) is a business owner from Durban. “I love adventure and I love Africa,” she says. “The Ford Ranger is amazing and I want to get down and dirty with it on an incredible adventure.”

THE FRONT:

The all new Chevrolet Utility enters the market with an infusion of Chevrolet DNA clearly apparent. The frontal view incorporates a bold face typical of all current generation Chevrolet’s defined by a strong dual-port grille design with the traditional “bow-tie” emblem placed on the separator bar between the two ports. This unmistakably defines this new ¾ ton pick-up as pure Chevrolet.

INTERIOR

The interior of the Chevrolet Utility features up-to-the-minute styling trends. The dashboard styling imparts a feel of spaciousness and features well placed controls within easy reach of the driver for excellent ergonomics. Air vents, door handles, door side panels, all have a fresh edgy look to them while digital ventilation controls set a new standard in the segment. The gear lever   has a comfortable grip and nifty slide-switch reverse interlock.

A feature of the new Chevrolet Utility is the high seating position for driver and passenger that provides for better all-round visibility and a better feeling of being in command of the vehicle, more in keeping with its utility application. The driver’s seat is height adjustable as is the steering column.

The shape of the seats too provides a higher level of comfort and features an innovative cushion shape. Seat coverings make use of embossed seat cover technology for an attractive look and feel. The use of this type of seat cover is a first in this segment of the market and is more often associated with trendy passenger vehicle interiors.

Storage space behind the seats is a voluminous 164 litres. In addition there is a range of ten storage spaces for oddments of various sizes ranging from coins to quite large size items. Amongst these there is a space suitable for a mobile phone next to the headlight switch, a small compartment below this switch as well as well as a storage tray on the top of the dashboard in the center. The B pillar storage compartment offers a concealed space for more valuable items. The large storage trays in the door panels are provided with separators to allow them to be tailored for specific storage requirements. Two cup holders are provided in front of the gear lever.

The instrument cluster is reminiscent of a Formula 1 car steering wheel with analogue readouts for speed on the left side and tachometer and fuel gauge on the right. In the centre is a range of digital readouts for the odometer and trip meter as well as an array of warning lights.. Illumination is by ice blue backlighting. All needles and gauges perform a full sweep calibration check when the ignition is switched on.

A radio/CD combination is provided. Features of this system include RDS, MP3, USB port, auxiliary input and Bluetooth.

EXTERIOR:

Stylish on the exterior, with that style extending to benchmark interior treatments and features, the new Chevrolet Utility will set heads turning as it enters the market.

(Earlsimxx) – 12th June 2013 – Based in San Diego, California, tuner HG Motorsports has revealed their latest project dubbed Project Grigio Silverstone and based on a 2012 Ferrari 458 Italia. It comes with complete car clear bra and protective windshield film as part of the paint protection.

The exterior was treated to Novitec Rosso parts and they are visible from the gallery, the car was then wrapped with a vinyl on the roof while its side skirts were painted gloss black. These Novitec parts include Novitec smoked LED taillights, 3^rd brake light and fog lights. Still on the lights, they fitted Novitec carbon fiber tail light covers.

The rear sports a Novitec carbon fiber rear spoiler matched by the Novitec carbon fiber rear diffuser. Then there is the Novitec carbon fiber fog light surround, front bumper splitter, carbon fiber fog light covers and carbon fiber engine louvers. All these parts were from Novitec. The list does not end there, there is a Novitec carbon fiber water reservoir, carbon fiber engine compartment panels and carbon fiber air box cover all from Novitec.

The car was then set on HRE S107 wheels sizing 20 inches and wrapped with Pirelli tires sizing 245/35/20 in the front and 335/30/25 in the rear. The suspension system was treated again to Novitec Rosso sport springs.

The 4.5 liter V8 was treated to a custom in-house dyno tune by HG Motorsports while the airflow received Akrapovic titanium exhaust system which retains factory valves and also Akrapovic titanium 200 cell catalytic converters to ensure its legality under California’s tight emission rules.

(Earlsimxx) – 12th June 2013 – Los Angeles based Mercedes-Benz and Porsche tuner Misha Designs has released a new video and photos of their Porsche Cayenne Wide Body Kit. The kit was revealed back in March with only studio photos. The new photos and video reveal a Porsche Cayenne GTS wearing this wide body kit.

The kit consists of a new front bumper, hood, side skirts, front and rear fender flares, roof spoiler and a rear bumper with diffuser. It can be fitted on any Porsche Cayenne models 2002-2010 (955-957). This kit will fit on the Porsche Cayenne, Cayenne S, Cayenne GTS and Cayenne Turbo. The tuner is also offering the front bumper lip and diffuser of this Porsche Cayenne body kit in optional carbon fiber.

This particular Porsche Cayenne GTS is riding on a set of DPE wheels and built by Specialty Car Craft who also built the car that was featured in the official kit, similarly it was dressed in 5 Spoke Black Concave wheels, DPE CSR05.

When it comes to the Cayenne, you always have a wide variety of options to choose from depending on the powerhouse that impresses you. This being the GTS sits atop the Cayenne S and comes equipped with a 4.5 liter V8 rated at 490hp at 6500rpm and 500N-m of torque at a low 3500 rpm. Its then mated to a six speed manual transmission that allows it to sprint from naught to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds.

Buyers can also opt for the six speed automatic transmission and as of 2010, the entire Cayenne range was uplifted. In the GTS you get a rear view camera and keyless start among other finer details.

Nairobi, Kenya Jun 11 – (Kennedy Njoroge) Toyota Kenya has unveiled  a 15 A-acre Business park that will include the Hino Motors showroom and workshop in Nairobi.

The business park situated on Popo road off Mombasa road will also be a Central Parts Depot for East and Central Africa, a Vehicle Logistics Centre for warehousing and processing vehicles for East and Central Africa

Launching the park at the weekend Toyota Kenya chairman Dennis Awori  said that the  investment prepares them well to be the regional hub for East and Central Africa.

Awori said that besides boosting tax revenue, this campaign will help create high quality Kenyan jobs and business opportunities for Kenyan Small and Medium sized Enterprises.

He said that the opening of the dedicated Hino facility will enable them give the appropriate focus to the needs of the commercial vehicle operator.

“The workshop here for example includes beds for drivers to rest while their trucks or buses undergo service, an important service in a commercial vehicle operation” he added

The firm has in addition partnered with Busmark, introduce high quality and safe buses in the country.

NAIROBI, Kenya 7th June (Eddy Kimani) – A unique 21-day off-road challenge dubbed the “Ford Ranger Odyssey Africa 2013” takes off in two weeks time and will start here in Kenya.

The 8,000 Kilometer off-road drive will see a group highly skilled drivers conquer some of the continents toughest terrain from the 23^rd of June and will see them traverse six African countries including Kenya, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. Their final destination will be South Africa on the 14^th of July.

CMC Motors Managing Director Solomon Muturi hosted the media in an elaborate briefing ceremony that took the guests through the journey of the anticipated back breaking Ford Ranger Odyssey challenge.

Muturi highlighted the showcase that the Odyssey will be, saying that besides exceptional driving skills from the drivers, the Ford Ranger will display its exceptional and superior technical capabilities.

“The Ford Ranger Odyssey Africa Challenge is a classic driving experience pitting man and machine through some of the toughest terrain in Africa while offering experiences on some of the most captivating sites on the continent including the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania.

The challenge has enlisted ten highly talented off-road drivers who were selected from hundreds of entries. The selected team then went for an intensive boot camp where the final top ten drivers were selected from a list of seventeen.

The winner is set to drive home a fully accessorized Ford Ranger.

Muturi added that the challenge is set to prove that the Ford Ranger will be able to withstand the demanding terrain that awaits it.

“Its meant to overcome every challenge you throw at it, hence the Ford Ranger Odyssey challenge.

Contestants will be officially flagged off from  Stoni Athi to proceed on to Amboseli National Park where they will camp overnight before crossing the Kenya/Tanzania border at Namanga on June 24^th.

Several media personalities will be at hand to report and witness the start of the Odyssey and will self-drive several of the Ford Ranger picks for a first-hand experience as they escort the challengers to the border of Kenya and Tanzania.

The crews will then head on through northern Tanzania into Zanzibar and then onwards to Mozambique via the Unity Bridge where they are scheduled to arrive on the 30^th of June.

On 6^th July the drivers will then cross into Zimbabwe at Mutare, traverse the Zimbabwe Highlands then drive again to Mozambique, before crossing into South Africa on July 13.

The Odyssey will end on the 14 of July in Pretoria, South Africa.

Speaking at the same function was CMC Ford divisional manager, Kennedy Ouko said the route plotted out for the ten drivers will be unforgiving to them and the pick up’s.

“The Ford Ranger Odyssey Africa will feature a group of determined, enthusiastic, skilled and tough contestants who will be a perfect match for the strength of the ranger, but they will be pushed to the limits,” said Ouko.

They are Alex Crickshanks, Bernard Hollander, Ricahrd Rammoneng, Kugesh Reddy, Ryno Swart, Wisaal Anderson, Paula Smith Dania Petrik Donatella d’Alosio and Cloe Boshoff.

The contestants are a mix of young but diverse mix of professionals and adventurers and are expected to start arriving in Kenya from the 19^th of June.

They were all selected on their ability to show superior 4×4 driving skills, stamina, mechanical aptitude, teamwork ability and outdoor survival skills.

To add to its now revered title as a superior pick up, the Ford Ranger was awarded the “International Pick Up Award 2013” in November last year.

A Pan-European committee of judges selected the Ranger following extensive testing at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, England.

NAIROBI, Kenya 5th May (EDDY KIMANI) – RMA Kenya, the Jaguar Land Rover franchise holders in Kenya have unveiled an ultra modern fleet workshop based in Nairobi’s Industrial Area on Kampala Road.

The workshop which will also serve as a showroom of the globally renowned brands, Land Rover and Jaguar, is the first of the many to be established here in Kenya.

Speaking at the unveiling of the facility to the press Wednesday, CEO Sanjiv Shah said the facility is the beginning of RMA’s footprint in Kenya.

“This first RMA Kenya workshop will offer top quality service to Land Rover Fleet owners. From this workshop we will serve Land Rover fleets from the NGO world, the Government, the UN, international bodies, Construction firms, Tour companies and other organisations who operate large fleets. This will be the new address for Land Rover.”

Shah also added that plans are well underway to spread their tentacles countrywide.

“There is a client base that find the Industrial Area well based and very convenient. We are targeting other locations including Karen, Langat to be able to provide multi-locations with the same high level of service. Westland, Waiyaki way and Gigiri are all part of the locations and will definitely give us coverage in providing our services in all areas.”

A boutique showroom is also in the pipeline and is set to be unveiled in two months time according to Shah.

“The boutique showroom will be the flagship and it will be based in Westland’s. We have sighted the property and we are going through the due diligence and once complete and all go’s according to plan we intend to launch in August this year.

The Kampala road fleet workshop occupies 27,000 sq feet and will employ 80 full time highly skilled Land Rover mechanics.

“The space occupied by this Fleet Workshop will ensure that we can service in excess of 20 Land Rovers daily in a safe environment for our staff,” he added.

 
Commenting on the technology installed at the Fleet Workshop, Shah said whereas there was emphasis on the latest Land Rover diagnostic tools, RMA Kenya was also cognizant of the importance of well skilled human labor.

 
“Our focus is simple, we want to equip the men and women working at the Fleet Workshop and not man the equipment,” he added.

 
“In other words, our top goal will be recruiting and train the best Kenyan automobile mechanics and then equip them the very best Land Rover diagnostic tools to ensure top quality service delivery.”

 
“We have already enrolled the first 17 highly trained mechanics and we will home breed from our own country. They will then be located in all the workshops that we will open all over the country under the RMA banner. Am urging people out their to interact with us, tell us what talent that they have. We are not recruiting a workforce and we will compliment your talent by giving the JLR training to enhance what you already have” said Shah.

KAJIADO, Kenya, June 4 (Olive Burrows) – The Bundu Fundis of Car 38 a Land Rover Hybrid, emerged triumphant over the hot, dusty and prickly course of the

25^th Rhino Charge held at the Oldonyonyokie group ranch in Kajiado.

It is the second time team Bundu Fundi has won the charge as they lifted the 1^st place trophy in 2010 as well.

“It’s a win for the entire family as I had my daughter and two sons with me on the team,” car 38’s driver, Sean Avery, told Capital Sports on receiving his trophy.

Car 38 drove to victory after covering the shortest distance of 27 Kms, 193 metres less than Car number 48 which came in second.

“This win is particularly significant for us as a family as my daughter Kuki gets married in a week. And we are grateful that unlike two years ago, she didn’t get stung by a bee and end up with a swollen face,” Avery said jokingly.

Car number 42 took third place after covering 14 checkpoints in a distance of 27.8 Kms.

Rhino rouge was the best performing all women team out of five for the fourth time after nine years of participating and driver Tanya Church was ecstatic that they won the unmodified car category as well.

“Last year we didn’t even finish the race because fourteen cars rolled going down the route we chose and so we decided we’d leave our 1974 Land Cruiser up there and called it a day. But not this year; it was a good short course in comparison to what we’ve driven through before and many more cars were able to cover it,” she said.

Defending champions Braeburn 7² finished in 50^th place in car number 49 after their GPS system failed making it impossible for the organisers to calculate the distance covered.

Team 7² was however able to cover the three checkpoints of the Gauntlet challenge in the shortest distance of 1.28 Kms.

Team 5 took first place as the highest fundraiser managing to net Sh12 million for the fencing of Mt. Kenya and Mau Eburu.

The team led by Alan McKittrick has managed to raise over Sh100 million in  all 25 years of the Rhino Charge’s existence.

Over 90 million was raised by the end of the 2013 charge.

June 4th, 2013 – The spontaneous power delivery and precise handling of the MINI all-wheel drive system ALL4 is now available in two more models: ALL4 will be available for the MINI Cooper Countryman and the MINI Cooper Paceman from July 2013. This increases the number of all-wheel versions within the MINI model range to ten models. The new models are also fitted with 6-speed manual transmission as standard, with 6-speed automatic transmission available as an option.

With the enhanced traction, driving stability and ability the permanent all-wheel drive system helps the driver stay in control while driving on snow, sand or slippery surfaces, as well offering extra grip on twisty roads.  ALL4 is based on an electromagnetic centre differential and distributes drive force at continuously variable levels between the front and rear axle. Its electronic control system is integrated directly in the DSC control unit (Dynamic Stability Control), enabling it to direct drive torque quickly and precisely to where it can be most effectively transformed into propulsion.

In the new models MINI Cooper Countryman ALL4 and MINI Cooper Paceman ALL4, the all-wheel drive system distributes the power of a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine with an output of 90 kW/122 bhp between the front and rear wheels. Spontaneous forward thrust is guaranteed by the engine’s maximum torque of 160 Newton metres (190 Nm with automatic transmission), at an engine speed of 4,250 rpm.

As a result, the MINI Cooper Countryman ALL4 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds (automatic: 11.7 seconds). The top speed is 184 km/h (182 km/h). Due to the high level of efficiency of both engine and drivetrain as well as extensive MINIMALISM technology, the boost in driving fun goes hand in hand with low levels of fuel consumption and emissions. The MINI Countryman ALL4 has an average fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres (automatic: 7.5 litres) on the EU test cycle and CO2 emissions of 167 (175) grams per kilometre.

The relation between driving fun and fuel consumption is equally impressive in the MINI Cooper Paceman ALL4. This model takes 11.8 seconds (automatic: 11.6 seconds) to accelerate from standing to 100 km/h and attains a top speed of 185 (183) km/h. Its fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels on the EU test cycle are the same as those of the MINI Cooper Countryman ALL4.

With this extension of the model range there will be four versions of each of the MINI Countryman and MINI Paceman with optional ALL4 in future. The previously available portfolio comprises the models MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 and MINI Cooper S Paceman ALL4 (135 kW/184 bhp), the MINI Cooper SD Countryman ALL4 and the MINI Cooper SD Paceman ALL4 (105 kW/143 bhp), along with the MINI Cooper D Countryman ALL4 and the MINI Cooper D Paceman ALL4 (82 kW/112 bhp). The top sports models MINI John Cooper Works Countryman and MINI John Cooper Works Paceman transmit their outstanding engine output of 160 kW/218 bhp to all wheels as standard.
