A new Miss World Kenya was crowned on Saturday in front of a capacity crowd at Film Studios in Nairobi, Kenya.

The 20-year-old Mombasa-born student, Shamim Nabil, beat out the rest of the top ten finalists and took home the title of Miss World Kenya 2012, which will see her spearhead the founding aspect of the Miss World franchise – beauty with a purpose – and also see her compete in the forthcoming 62nd Miss World Final 2012 held in the cultural city, Ordos, China.

Aside from the coveted title of Miss World Kenya, Shamim Nabil also took home a cash prize of Sh 1 million among other rewards.

Terry Mungai, franchise director of Miss World Kenya and Ashley’s CEO, hopes to continue to grow the brand in Kenya and also transform the negative stereotypes of beauty pageants.

“This is the first time that we have the reigning Miss World and her continental counterparts, Europe and Caribbean, join us in Kenya.  This is a cornerstone in Miss World Kenya’s history, and shows our dedication to continue to grow the franchise.”

Shamim Nabil during her reign as Miss World Kenya 2012 hopes to fight drug abuse and trafficking in the country through partnerships with government bodies and international organizations.

The 62nd Miss World Final 2012 will host 130 representatives from all over the world, competing for the crown on August 18th.

Snapp ties up sponsorship of Miss World Kenya

EABL today announced that they have tied up title sponsorship of the Miss World Kenya 2012 pageant. At a press conference Caroline Ndung’u, EABL-Kenya’s Marketing Director said, “We are excited to announce that SNAPP will be the title sponsor for the Miss World Kenya 2012 pageant. This is the beginning of a strong partnership with Ashleys Kenya, who are the Miss World Kenya the franchise holder in Kenya.”

The Miss World Kenya pageant is held every year as part of the Miss World competition. The lady crowned as Miss World Kenya 2012 will represent Kenya in the global contest that will be held in August in Macau China.

SNAPP was recently launched as a brand new addition to the EABL portfolio (Read about it HERE). It is a natural fruit-flavored alcoholic beverage targeted at the modern sophisticated woman. “We believe the synergy between SNAPP, and the aspirations of the ladies who join the Miss World Kenya contest are very strong. These women are confident, classy, socially and economically empowered and love to be seen as sophisticated and glamorous,” added Ms. Ndung’u.

Ashleys Kenya Director, Ms. Terry Mungai, who was also present at the press conference said, “We are proud to be associated with SNAPP. Miss World Kenya is a pageant that offers young ladies the opportunity to stand on the world stage and represent their country to vie for a chance to become the next Miss World. The mission for Miss World is “beauty with a purpose” that is something Miss World Kenya will live by.”

As title sponsor of Miss World Kenya 2012 , EABL through their brand SNAPP, have engaged Complete Africa, a leading production house in Kenya who also worked on Tusker All Stars, to produce a 7-part series that highlights the journey from the auditions to the grand finale for the ladies who will successfully make it through past the selection process.

“We will be at the auditions that kick off this Easter weekend in Mombasa and Kisumu, and the following week in Nairobi. We’ll be recording what happens during every stage of the competition and we are very excited about creating a world-class TV production for this year’s Miss World Kenya,” said Stevie Price, CEO of Complete Africa.

The competition is open to ladies aged between 18 and 24 years old. “We urge young ladies who want to pursue their dreams of becoming Miss Kenya 2012 to register online at www.missworldkenya.com . We will also be doing registration at the audition venues,” said Ms. Mungai.

The FASHION icons of 2011

The world of fashion in 2011 also had a definite Kenyan feel to it, and though a lot of thanks should be given to Louis Vuitton for falling in love with the bright and stark reds and blues of the Maasai shuka, there was a home-grown evolution too.

1. Suzie Beauty
The first ever Kenyan made and owned cosmetics line, introduced by the very gorgeous Suzie Wokabi this December. It was a dream come true after three years, and the quality is top notch! Congratulations!

2. Blackbird Jeans
Sidney Owino and Zeddie Lukoe are 23 and since their debut fashion show in New York in the summer, they have been as busy as all they have all the four years their fashion line has been alive. They have been appointed as head designers for Madison Joseph (NY) and working concurrently to come up with their latest collection.

3. Susan Anyango
She made it to the top 20 of this year’s Miss World extravaganza in London. Despite the stiff competition, she got a sponsorship boost by Oriflame to keep looking good, and she stood tall for Kenya during the competition. She is driven now to set up a cancer foundation in honour of her late mother, who died from the disease.

4. Pat Mbela
Poisa, is her fashion label. She showcased in the Swahili and Nigeria fashion weeks this year and bagged a number of awards – a seal of approval for her ethnic clothes and jewellery. Kudos to the East Africa fashion designer of the year.

5. Ann McCreath
She opened yet another branch of Kiko Romeo at the Yaya Centre this year, no small fete. The shop opened just months after she returned from a successful Fashion Week of African designers in New York.

6. John Kaveke
His name is synonymous with Kenyan fashion, and rightly so. He has mentored hundreds of designers and still going strong. Trendy, signature designs he floated on the catwalk in the London Fashion Week. Bravo!

Miss World Kenya making headway…

Count down to the finals of the Miss World 2011 competition is on! In fact all that beauty pageant action and glamor is going down this Sunday the 6th at the Earls Court, London.

There have been several competitions going on to determine beauty winners in various categories and from the look of things our girl Susan Catherine Anyango is doing quite well.
The girls have been bonding while still competing against each other. So far there have been competitions with the main purpose being to shortlist the finalists (there are 121 girls competing for the crown).

These competitions are:

Top 10 Beauty with a purpose finalists:

Miss World Kenya lands Oriflame deal

As Miss World Kenya 2011, Susan Anyango is finalising preparations for the global beauty pageant in London next month, she won’t have to worry about keeping those good looks in check till then.

Not to suggest that they fade, but Oriflame Cosmetics has decided to step in should she need to be in tip-top condition.

In a sponsorship deal, Susan has received a “wide range of beauty products that she needs to enhance her looks and build her confidence as she prepares for the global beauty parade”.

The sponsorship extends to the entire duration of her reign as Miss Kenya.

Oriflame East Africa CEO and Chairman, Fred Andersson, said his company had found it prudent to support the Beauty Queen because the project she has elected to champion was one of the key pillars of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

“Health and wellness is a critical part of our business and we are proud that Miss Anyango will champion the prevention of cancer during her reign and beyond,” said Andersson.

Andersson has always reiterated that Oriflame believes more in overall individual wellness and is a strong contender for giving back to the community.

He was personally involved in coming up with the company’s latest brochure, making it as local and as natural as possible.

Susan meanwhile is hoping to use her clout to campaign for the early detection of cancers and also for stakeholder investment in cancer detection and treatment equipment.

“My mother died of leukemia in 2005 and this is what has inspired me to focus on cancer so that in my own way, I can reduce the number of deaths resulting from preventable cancers,” she said.

The Beauty Queen observed in a past interview with Capital Lifestyle that her determination to promote awareness and early detection of cancers was solid.

Her cancer Foundation, which has been registered in Kenya, will focus on awareness creation, promoting regular check-ups and championing healthy lifestyles.

Oriflame, which was founded in 1979, made Kenya its first market on the continent outside North Africa, launching offices in Nairobi and Mombasa in December, 2008 with an investment of Sh140 million.
