Atemi teams up with Praiz for Manzili concert

ATEMI-PRAIZ

Kenyan diva Atemi Oyungu will be on stage with Nigeria’s answer to John Legend, Praiz, this Saturday, in an event to launch Atemi’s latest album Manzili.

The performance by the two strong artistes is expected to be a bit of a love fest, judging by the genre of music that they subscribe to.

Concert doors at the Carnivore Grounds open at 7pm and go on into the wee hours of the morning.

Atemi’s band will be the supporting cast for the two stars. The Nigerian singer meanwhile has been in the country since Monday, along with some of his back-up singers, prepping to deliver an impressive show.

The musicians have been working on a song together which they will perform for audiences for the first time on Saturday.

Atemi is managed by Taurus Musik who have organised the event. Manzili is Atemi’s sophomore album and features the hit track Usijali, which she did with Delvin Mudigi of Sauti Sol.

Praiz, real name Praise Adejo, emerged from the rafters in 2008 when he made it to the finals of the MTN Project Fame West Africa. Since then, with his John Legend inspired sound, he has been partnering with superstar artistes like M.I. and Bez to get his own way to the top.

His most recent single Rich and Famous has earned him choruses of praise and admiration – even as he prepares to launch his debut album.

After this concert in Carnivore, Praiz will share the stage with Babyface, Mike Epps and Waje in Lagos next month.

Ghana’s Efya; young, fun and talented

EFYA

Fun, spunk and groovy would be the words to aptly describe the character of young Ghanaian musician Efya.

While incorporating words from her local tongue, Efya sets an enjoyable mellow vibe with just enough spice to get your head bobbing.

Formerly known as Miss Jane, Efya is a 26-year-old singer, songwriter and actress from Kumasi, Ghana, born to film producer mother Nana Awindor.

Singing from the age of 9 simply for the joy of it, Efya realized in 2008 that it was possible to take it up music as a career.

She emerged second in local talent show Stars of The Future and signed a record deal with event company Charter House, which resulted in her joint debut album; Irene and Jane Unveiled. In this case, Irene was the winner of the talent show in question.

Irene and Jane Unveiled was released in South Africa only. In 2011, when the recording contract elapsed, Efya went on to perform at several gigs, even as she perfected her tool of trade at the University of Ghana while she studied Theatre Arts, Directing and Music.

Since then, Efya has worked with artistes from the West Africa region including Nigerian stars Brymo and Sarkodie. At the moment, she is close to releasing her first solo album – Love Genesis.

Efya, in her fresh new identity has been selected to be the third African act to grace the Tusker Malt Club on April 25. First up was Nigeria’s Bez, and after that Zonke from South Africa.

The part time model has six awards under her belt in just five years, a perfect choice for Tusker Malt.

Diana Nduba makes debut at Blankets & Wine

DIANA-NDUBA

Lights, camera, action for 24-year-old Diana Nduba this weekend will be on the Blankets and Wine stage when it opens at 1pm on Sunday.

The young musician who released her first solo single in 2009 – Too Good – will be performing live for the first time in a long time and she aims to please.

“I will be singing most of my recent releases and hopefully the audience will be happy. I am very excited about this. It is my first time to perform at Blankets at Wine,” she told Capital Lifestyle.

Life and love are her favourite song topics as displayed in two of her more recent tracks Have You Seen Her? and Salale.

Also on the B&W stage for the first time this weekend will be Ugandan siren Lilian Mbabazi, backed by the Sundowners band.

Lilian is three years old into her solo career and it is not fledgling in the least if the popularity of her track Danger is anything to go by.

Other acts this weekend are Chris Adwar and the Villagers Band and Zimbabwean jazz-men Jam Signal.

Sunday’s festival will pay tribute to a large section of Africans and a high turnout is expected especially as schools will be closed.

B&W runs from 1pm to 7pm.

Celebrating Kenya before the elections

BLANKETS-EVENT-INC-KATO

Blankets and Wine is expected to be a rally for peace combined with a stress buster this weekend, as a complete Kenyan suit of Mumala, Nyota Ndogo, Kato Change and Just A Band have been lined up as performers.

The 42nd edition, which runs from 1-7pm, will be a solely Kenyan affair and happen just hours before the country votes for its next batch of honourable leaders.

Though neither of the musicians is particularly known for drumming up conscience socio-political change, organizers of Blankets and Wine want the fans and attendees to know how beautiful the country is.

“This Sunday will be a celebration of Kenyan music. Our intention is to promote how beautiful Kenya is and to encourage conversation on what it is we love about Kenya”, said Bonnie Mwalili, the Communications Officer for Blankets.

Turnout is expected to be high, due to March 4 being a public holiday but revelers will be advised against being irresponsible.

“The event runs from 1pm to 7pm. There will be no after party, so that everyone has time to go home and rest, and get ready to vote the next day,” he said, a first for the monthly event.

This Sunday’s festival will be the second at the Carnivore and advance tickets are already on sale on www.ticketsasa.com, and most Dormans outlets in Nairobi.

Mumala is a first-timer at the event, and Change who has been there as supporting cast will now be at the forefront.

Kenyans step up to Mi Casa at Blankets

MI-CASA-BLANKETS-2

Kenyan concert goers outdid themselves at the 41st edition of Blankets and Wine this Sunday, screaming at the right moments and singing along to express their pleasure at the performances lined up.

Naomi Wachira had the pleasure of stopping the masses at their tracks as they walked in, Barbara Guantai teased them into their blankets, Suzanne Owiyo made them open the wine and do a little jig, before the definite show-stoppers Mi Casa from South Africa came on stage and completed the home run.

It may have been the excitement of a new venue where parking was easier and traffic was bearable, but the joy was in the air and there was no stopping it.

There were too many people to count at the Carnivore, where there was a good mix of young and not so young fans – one side of the divide dressed in costume and the others in plain sundress, tees and jeans.

It was not without teething problems though, but the good outweighed the bad – as evidenced by the positive feedback on Twitter and Facebook.

Said founder and head honcho at Blankets Muthoni Ndong’a: “This being the first event at Carnivore we we’re naturally apprehensive about how people would respond to the change of venue but so far the feedback has been extremely positive. Most importantly for us, we had a lot families coming back into the event which is obviously a good thing since they are a key part of our community. It’s good to see that the changes we have introduced are already bearing fruits but we’ll keep tweaking things here and there in the coming months to make sure we streamline the overall experience.”

“Separately, I was very happy with our line-up this time. The musicians did remarkably well and I’m pretty sure everyone will agree. We also had some really positive feedback about the Cafe Jukebox project with DJ Cortega and DJ Adrian. The fact that people appreciate the African sets they played is a plus for us and a step towards achieving our intention of making Blankets & Wine an authentically African event.”

Mi Casa set stage in Nairobi this weekend

MI-CASA-B&W
Blankets and Wine will have a little bit of everything this weekend as SA band Mi Casa will be mucking about on stage, joined by the pristine Suzanne Owiyo, alternative Naomi Wachira and the chill out Barbara Guantai.

With so much talent, highlighting one single artist was a tough job for organisers.

First on stage will be Wachira, who is Kenyan-born but fresh from Seattle in the US. Lucky for us Blackman’s Nairobi Sessions caught up with her on that black and white sofa, to give the city a taste of what to expect.

Owiyo, who was recently signed on by South African based publishing company, Sheer Publishing, has been dubbed as the Tracy Chapman of Africa.

But the star players will be the odd get up of DJ/Producer Dr Duda, singer/composer J’Something and Trumpeter T-Mo.

The group were invited to perform at US President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony last month and in the same month curtain raised for US rapper Drake’s concert in Johannesburg.

Their popularity is riding on their self-titled debut album from which the hit songs ‘These Streets’ and ‘Heavenly Sent’ are most outstanding. Here’s a listen…

Due to a tight schedule, Mi Casa will arrive in Nairobi on the morning of the performance which will be at the Carnivore Grounds this time round, as organisers battle issues like traffic and accessibility.

“It will be the same as in Mamba Village. You can come with your own food and drinks, which can also be purchased from the Carnivore.”

Advance tickets are Sh1,500, Sh2,000 at the gate and Sh500 for children between the ages of 5-12.

In Pictures: Smirnoff paints Nairobi white

DJ Chucky (Kenya) & Shaun 'Banger' Scott (UK) Smirnoff ushered in 2013 in style, with a party that thousands will remember well-in to the new year, at the Carnivore restaurant on 31st December 2012.

Dubbed ‘The Night,’ the New Year’s Eve party featured, for the first time in Kenya, a 16-DJ line-up including international mix masters DJ Shaun ‘Banger’ Scott from the U.K. and DJ Dino Bravo from South Africa. Completing the line-up were the cream of local DJs Joe Mfalme, DJ Chucky, DJ Kaydee, DJ Riggz, DJ Klash, DJ Stretch, DJ Jean-Marie, DJ Frakus, DJ Wati, DJ 7, DJ E, DJ Denz, DJ Erik and DJ Cat, and one of Kenya’s most talented emcee’s Buddha Blaze

The all-white party saw revelers entertained from three stages with a mix of music ranging from kwaito to dance, house, international and trance, with the stages effectively creating three parties in one. To enhance the experience were features such as a boom-box techno dome, a teleporting wall allowing party-goers to ‘travel’ and get photographed at world-famous sites such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France and Times Square Garden New York, U.S.A., signature Smirnoff cocktails and pyrotechnics.

Representing Kenya will also be DJ Chukie, DJ Kaydee, DJ Riggz, DJ Klash and DJ Stretch among others.

“This is a great time for Smirnoff to show appreciation to our consumers, and to give back by way of showing them what the Smirnoff Nightlife Experience is all about,” says Kate Katisya, Smirnoff’s Brand Manager in Kenya.

“We know that young people love a good party, so what we’re promising to deliver is not just a good party, but a great experience. We want to show the world that nobody has a party like Smirnoff and Nairobi combined!”

The Night will also feature a teleporting booth and Smirnoff signature cocktails.

In line with its support for the responsible drinking campaign, Smirnoff will be maintaining a strict ‘over 18 only’ policy, and has put in place measures to verify age on entry, in addition to providing maximum security to ensure that revelers have a good time in a safe environment.

Tickets are available at all Carnivore outlets at Sh600 for advance tickets, and Sh200 more at the gate.

Erykah Badu hopes fans enjoy as much as she will

41-year-old American musician Erykah Badu promised a good show yesterday at a press conference, ahead of the Tusker Lite Experience that turns one-year-old this month.

Flanked by EABL’s Marketing Director Caroline Ndungu and Capital Group Chairman Chris Kirubi, Badu shared what fans should expect at the Carnivore Tuesday evening.

“I just hope people will be able to take something away from the concert, and will enjoy as much as I do,” she said.
