BBA 2013; looking for a new breed of Kenyans?

PREZZO-AND-MALONZA

Big brother is back in town, looking for Kenyans who qualify to represent the country in this year’s edition of Big Brother Africa, which kicks off in May.

Interested participants have until Valentine’s Day to prove that they are the superstars that Africa has been waiting for, or just to have good cooking and interaction skills.

To qualify, participants have to be above the age of 21 and speak fluent English.

A statement from MultiChoice Kenya also spells out the need for interested parties to possess qualities such as tolerance, determination, enthusiasm, open-mindedness, gutsy, adventurous and the ability to entertain.

As is the norm, each season of BBA has something new to offer, which will be revealed at a later date.

“As always, we won’t say much about the new season but I can confirm that we’ve added a new element that I think will get the hearts of viewers racing,” promised M-Net Africa Managing Director Biola Alabi.

She adds that the big surprise this year in BBA 8 is one that ‘audiences are expected to fall in love with’.

Participating countries other than Kenya are Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia, which has swapped places with Liberia.

Entry forms are available on www.africamagic.tv/bigbrother, while printed forms will be available at the MultiChoice offices from February 1.

Sivan Pillay, the MD of show producers Endemol expressed: “I am hopeful that this year we are creating a red-hot show that will include familiar trademarks like nominations and evictions alongside a very special new development.”

Along with several other possible goodies in between, the winner will walk away with about Sh25 million, or $300,000 if you like, if they manage to stay in the house for 91 days.

The Kenyans best remembered for being in the house are Alex Holi, Sheila Kwamboka, Malonza Chege and the Swagger Farmer musician Prezzo, who came closest to winning the cash.

Once again Kenyans are hoping to take it home, with some demanding a more transparent system of voting that is favourable to countries with smaller populations than the most frequent BBA winner, Nigeria.

As far as love goes, Sheila’s pairing with Nigerian winner Uti seems to have panned out over the years, and tongues are still wagging right now with no real confirmation on what is really happening between Prezzo and Nigerian girl Goldie.

What would you like to see this year?

Where did Prezzo get it wrong?

Angry Kenyan BBA fans vented their frustrations on twitter and facebook after rapper Prezzo was evicted from the House last night, in a tense finale that saw South African contestant Keagan announced as winner.

Hopes that had built to a crescendo when it was just Prezzo and Keagan left in the Upville house, but they were quickly dashed when the musician was asked to leave.

Prezzo got two country votes compared to Keagan’s whopping seven, which earned him a grand prize of about Sh25 million.

But as the anger subsided several good-luck wishes were relayed to the 4sho 4shizzy singer, congratulating him for almost winning the show, including from Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta’s Presidential campaign team.

Where did it go wrong?

Former BBA contestant Sheila Kwamboka thinks that Prezzo’s downfall may have been because of conflict in the house.

“He made too many enemies, and that’s what worked against him,” she told Capital Lifestyle.

“A lot of Africans genuinely liked him. He was cool, and an entertainer, but was disliked because of the fights he had in the house, especially with Barbz from South Africa.”

Another former Kenyan contestant Nick Wagondu meanwhile said that Prezzo played the game well and Kenyans should accept the vote.

“It must be hard for him to have come so close and then lose. There’s more to it than voting. Maybe we’ll get it next year,” he said.

Prezzo did not walk away from the competition empty-handed; he was given a big-boy scooter, a PVR decoder and the title of Ambassador for the ONE campaign against hunger.

PM Raila votes for Prezzo

Prime Minister Raila Odinga has officially joined the Team Prezzo hash-tag with a plea to all Kenyans to vote for the musician to win as Big Brother Africa Stargame enters its last stretch.

In a tweet this morning, the PM said he would like all ‘Kenyans to come together in large numbers & vote for Prezzo’.

This is the first time a senior government official has made a comment on the reality TV show, which is watched by millions of people across the continent.

Prezzo is the second Kenyan contestant to ever make it to the finals of the contest, and could be the first Kenyan to ever win it. (Vote for Prezzo here).

Nominated MP Millie Odhiambo also vouched for Prezzo, saying all of ODM ‘reloaded’ supports the young lad.

“It’s about time a Kenyan won this event,” she told Capital Lifestyle.

The CMB was saved from eviction last night with four country votes, namely; Kenya, Tanzania, Liberia and the Rest of Africa.

He tied with Lady May, who got backing from Angola, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Kyle had the most votes, at 6, snapping up even Uganda’s support over his compatriot, Janette, who only got Ghana’s help.

The petit housemate was the latest casualty, dropping at her very first nomination.

Will Kenya win BBA for the first time?

According to the current voting patterns, Prezzo stands a good chance of winning the Stargame – hypothetically speaking. This is because none of his four votes (which have been constant the past two weeks) are likely to be shared with the other Upvillers, as contestants from those countries have already left the house.

Namibian Lady May is likely to lose the Angola count to Talia to make three votes, while Kyle will most probably lose Malawi, South Africa, and Zambia as contestants from those countries are still in the run for the Sh25 million. This sees his six-vote strength cut by half.

Rude-boy Keegan is likely to secure the Ghanaian vote due to his friendship with evicted contestant Keitta, and together with his native South Africa, that gives him two.

Keegan, who is Prezzo’s strongest opposer in the house, had once said that he would slit his wrists if the Kenyan wins but we hope that he has since reconsidered.

BBA: I am not a traitor! says Alex

The latest Kenyan casualty in Big Brother Stargame, Alex, has defended himself against claims that he is a traitor because of putting Prezzo up for nomination.

In an interview with Capital Lifestyle on telephone, the aspiring businessman said he was shocked to see the accusations on social media when he left the studio Upville house.

“We are just different people with different personalities. And his personality conflicted with my interests and that’s it. I did not pretend. You saw it when he came at me just for giving Goldie a compliment. I was like hey man relax, but he didn’t. The next he was treating me like nothing had happened, no apologies nothing.”

“I found him a bit too aggressive and that was that. There was no beef at all. I don’t keep grudges,” he added, insisting that his reasons for the nomination were in plain sight.

Alex says he had hoped to be a finalist, but since that was not going to happen he was rooting for Wati from Malawi to win the $300,000 cash prize.

“I think he should win cause he’s a smart guy, and nice when he’s not intoxicated.”

Alex said the virtue he came out of the house with was tolerance and he hopes it will come in handy when he starts up his business.

“I can’t tell you about it because I don’t want anyone to steal my ideas,” he laughs, but stated that it involved a lot of money!

Alex was booted out of the Stargame alongside Keitta from Ghana, who laughed off his ‘reluctance’ to shower as a by-product of the cold weather in Johannesburg, South Africa where the house is located.

“Yes, there was hot water but Lady May would shower for a whole hour and finish the hot water, then what to do!”

Keitta is eager to use his new found freedom and celebrity status to catapult his modeling career among other things.

“I’ve grown fat from all this food in the house and will work on getting into shape so I can continue with my modeling. There are a few prospects already lined up for me that you probably should hear about in a couple of weeks. I got a lot of advice and insight from the South African contestant Barbz, who was like a big sister to me.”

The Ghanaian explained the division between Upvillers and Downvillers as a clash of character.

“Downvillers are more connected and Upvillers were more laid back, I guess its cause they’re celebrities. So things just played out that way where Downville guys felt united and the Upville guys got intimidated.”

Keitta says he will be glad to be able to buy his own alcohol since leaving the house, wake up without the animal sounds blaring in his ear every morning, and be united with sweetheart and former contestant Mildred in a few days time.

Alex is also hoping to win back someone’s heart in Nairobi. Anyone know who the mystery girl is?

Meanwhile, CMB Prezzo is back up for nomination this week.

Alex booted out of Big Brother Stargame

A not too disappointed Kenyan boy Alex became the second countryman to leave the Big Brother contest last night, in a double eviction that also saw Keitta from Ghana sent home.

Voters from across Africa chose to save CMB Prezzo, Lady May from Namibia and Malawian Wati with 5, 5 and 3 votes respectively.

Prezzo’s weight came from Kenya, Liberia, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Rest of Africa. Nigeria opted to give their vote to Lady May despite a link between Prezzo and former Naija housemate Goldie.

Alex got no votes, while Keitta’s votes from Ghana and Sierra Leone were not enough to keep him in the game.

Alex was surprised to see that his ‘boy’ Wati had placed him up for eviction to see how he would fare against his compatriot Prezzo, but the celebrity musician won the day again.

“I thought that instead of voting for the celebrity, the African people would vote for the ordinary person,” said Alex when he chatted with BBA host IK on his way out of the Stargame.

Goldie’s exit has forced Prezzo to interact more with housemates, who are frustrated because they keep nominating him and Lady May, but Africa chooses to save them.

Should they stop trying to orchestrate things and realize that them staying in the house is not really up to them? Biggie, could you talk to the Downvillers?

It will be interesting to see what reception Alex gets in Nairobi, after his more popular sibling Malonza was not lacking in female attention during an eviction party at The Galileo Lounge.

Former BBA contestant Millicent Mugadi was present at the VIP party.

Is ‘Lonely’ Prezzo leaving BBA Stargame?

An ‘isolated’ Prezzo has expressed a desire to leave the Big Brother house voluntarily, due to loneliness.

Confiding his thoughts to Zambian housemate Talia, the Kenyan musician said he may not be able to handle Upville anymore.

“My tank is on empty right now,” he said to her, while asking her to keep the chat between them.

Talia told Prezzo that if he left he would be letting himself and his fans down.

“You’re so close to the finish line, why quit now,” Talia said in a blaze` tone.

Was Prezzo being honest? Is he really lonely and unhappy or was he trying to get into Talia’s heart? Check out the video and let us know what you think…

This is the second time Prezzo has said something akin to this, the first time being during a drunken stupor as he chatted with Ghanaian housemate Keitta.

Prezzo gets precious votes, as Goldie leaves BBA

Votes from Kenya, Tanzania, Liberia and Angola saved Big Brother contestant Prezzo from making an exit from Upville yesterday.

They were unable however to save his Nigerian girl Goldie, who had to leave despite two country votes from Nigeria and the ‘Rest of Africa’.

Kyle was a surprise with the most votes at 6, while the eclectic Namibian Lady May was saved by her own country, Zimbabwe, and Botswana in what seemed to be a regional grouping.

Goldie could only manage a lame goodbye hug to Prezzo after a nasty altercation between them on Sunday afternoon, and was awash with tears at having to leave the house.

Goldie was aghast to see that she had been nominated by Ghana-man Keitta, whom she thought they had an ‘understanding’ with.

Looking stunning in black, Goldie would have been even more distraught has she known that her love interest Prezzo had put her up for eviction the previous week.

Her exit puts an end to the only coupling existent in the Stargame, and it will be interesting to see how Prezzo fares in the house on his own. Constant questions have been raised in the past about their relationship and whether the Kenyan’s feelings were genuine. Have a look at the video below and let us know what you think! Has CMB Prezzo betrayed Goldie?

MP Rachel Shebesh gathers votes for Prezzo

Nominated MP Rachel Shebesh has congratulated CMB Prezzo for the game he’s playing in the Big Brother House and called on Kenyans to support him by voting as much as they can to keep him in Upville.

In an interview on Capital FM on Friday, the MP said that Prezzo had done Kenya proud.

The musician was one of three Kenyans chosen to take part in the Big Brother reality show, alongside Alex and Malonza, who has since been evicted.

Prezzo is up for eviction this week, against Goldie (Nigeria), Kyle (Uganda) and Lady May (Namibia) after being nominated by his own countryman Alex.

Shebesh however says he should stay in the game and win the cash prize worth about Sh25 million.

“You know I watch Big Brother and I’m a big fan of Big Brother, thanks to my boys. And this guy called Prezzo, before he went to the house everybody thought he was just a rapper in Kenya with bling bling.  But my perspective of Prezzo changed first because he brands us,” she said.

Shebesh stated that Kenyans should big up Prezzo for representing the country.

“You know anyone who brands the country, has a bigger thinking. Every time Prezzo is in that house you can see Kenya, whether it’s the flag or whatever it is.”

The MP also complimented Prezzo for his dry sense of humour and extreme entertainment value.

“He’s smooth and he’s crafty. All the girls are swarming around him pretending that they don’t like him but they like him,” said Shebesh, “I don’t know what they would do without Prezzo.”

She urged Kenyans to vote for him, not by talking, but by sending text messages on their phones with the message PREZZO to 5626.

“Prezzo’s success is Kenyan success. Prezzo’s success is every artiste’s success, so Kenyans, let’s keep him in the house!”

Prezzo needs more country votes than the two he got last week to stay in the house.

Meanwhile, Malonza’s coming home party is expected to take place at the Galileo Lounge on Saturday, July 14.

Malonza had a shock exit last weekend alongside his special friend from Namibia, Junia.

‘Angry’ Prezzo breaks down in Diary Session

Prezzo has broken down in the Big Brother House as tensions continue between original Upville occupants and the Downville musketeers.

Prezzo struggled to keep his tears in before breaking down, as he confessed to Biggie that he was ‘carrying so much anger’ inside.

The Kenyan’s reference was on Downvillers and how they were openly disrespecting him and his girl Goldie from Nigeria.

As Prezzo struggled to stop the tears from flowing, Biggie assured him that it was ‘ok to cry’.

Watch the video here.

Trouble has been brewing since Downvillers vowed not to let anyone from Upville take the $300,000 grand prize when Stargame comes to an end next month.

As such, they have been snubbing Lady May, Prezzo and Goldie and keeping more to themselves, especially the Downville boys.

Could this be the real reason Alex has turned his back on Prezzo? Make sure you vote to keep your favourite housemate this week. Your choices are Prezzo, Goldie, Lady May and Kyle; in that order.

Is Prezzo’s time up in the Big Brother game?

The four BBA Housemates who escaped eviction this past weekend are back in the stress pool, barely a day after counting themselves lucky for still being in the game.

Prezzo smiled when Biggie called him out up for the eviction last night, alongside Lady May, Kyle and Goldie.

Prezzo got three votes; from Keagan (South Africa), Uganda’s Kyle and his own country man Alex.

Alex, whose brother Malonza was evicted over the weekend, said he nominated Prezzo because the musician is ‘selfish’. His choice over an apparent spat over cigarettes has sparked a mini backlash on twitter, where #KOT (Kenyans on twitter) accused Alex of being a traitor.

One twitterati Mary Wanyeri said: ‏”@MissWanyeri – So #Alex nominated #Prezzo today at #BBA, what happened to patriotism….the day #Alex is nominated you will for sure come home with #Zack”.

Prezzo was saved by Kenya and Tanzania last time, and the same countries are expected to stand by him in this second round. However, based on the votes this past weekend, Prezzo and Kyle are the weakest link.

Lady May and Goldie each had more than three countries behind them. The Namibian, who was saved by 5.5 countries, was nominated by the most housemates, getting 8 votes in total.

During the nominations, a lot of the housemates didn’t have nice things to say about each other.

Voting lines are open until Sunday, when the verdict will be announced. Malonza meanwhile, is expected back in Nairobi later this week.
