Are you a big fan of the afro? This week Lumka teaches you how to grow a ‘fro.

As my collection of wigs will attest, I am a huge fan of the afro. I’ve always thought it would be too much of a mission to grow my own, but not anymore. Here’s how you too can join the likes of Pearl Thusi in the great big bouncy hair stakes.

Use the right products

The best way to grow a ‘fro is to start afresh. Give your hair the chop, then treat it right to get the best results.

Moisturise the scalp regularly

Don’t use harsh shampoos on your hair

Invest in a sulphate-free shampoo that won’t strip your scalp.

Remember not to use too much product – your hair will end up looking greasy or weighed down.

Maintaining your ‘fro

Use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to detangle your hair. For best results, detangle your hair while it is wet.

Plait your hair every night to lock in the moisture, sleep with a silk doek on, and make sure you also cover your hair in harsh weather conditions.

After styling, use a spray to maintain bouncy curls.
