Mombasa, a place steeped in history, is a dynamic commercial and cosmopolitan port town. At the water’s edge is Fort Jesus, an imposing fort that stands watch over the harbour. The high gun turrets, battlements and underground passages of this 16th Century Fort were the centre of a historic struggle for control of the Kenya coast between the Portuguese army and the Shirazi Arabs. Aside from history, modern Mombasa is a city of great diversity with lovely restaurants, markets and a melting pot of cultures.

Former honourees include Marrakech in 2015, 14-time winner Cape Town, and two-time winner Sharm El Sheikh in 2007 and 2004.

World Travel Awards celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year and since its inception in 1993, it is recognized globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.

Each year WTA covers the globe with a series of regional Gala Ceremonies staged to recognize and celebrate individual and collective successes within each key geographical region and across all sectors of the tourism industry.
