Circle’s Modern and Contemporary East African Art Auction returns

The Circle Art Agency brings back the eagerly anticipated annual Modern and Contemporary East African Art Auction happening this year for the third time running.

The Circle Modern and Contemporary East African Auction follows the lead and success of London based Bonhams and Nigeria based Arthouse Contemporary auctions which have staged regular art auctions in a bid to build the emerging African art market.

The Circle auction, the only one in East Africa; has transformed the art scene in Kenya, creating enormous interest in East African art regionally and internationally.

The 2014 auction grossed over Ksh 18 million for 57 Lots, this year we have selected 51 Lots from artists that include 94 year old Edward Njenga (Kenyan), Dawit Abebe (Ethiopian), Jak Katarikawe (Uganda), George Lilanga (Tanzanian), Rashid Diab (Sudanese), Charles Sekano (South African), John Muafangejo (Namibian) among many others. The Lots estimates range from Ksh 50,000 – Ksh 2 million aiming at both new collectors and regular international collectors of African art.

The third edition will have Dendy Easton, a British auctioneer with over 40 years experience at Sotherby’s and Bonhams auction houses and the Antiques Roadshow on BBC TV. The highlight of this auction that will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at the Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel at 6:00pm with a selection of Tanzanian art from the 70s from the private collection of the Zanzibari hotelier, Emerson Skeens. Proceeds from these sales will be used to raise funds for the Emerson Foundation to support Zanzibari projects for education and culture.
