Art: Kenyan artists open photographic, sculptural installation

jua kali exhibition opening

For all the art lovers, ‘Jua Kali: A photographic and Sculptural installation’ by mixed media artist Tahir Karmali in collaboration with Glass master Tonney Mugo and found objects artist Dennis Muraguri, will be opening Thursday, 17th July at Kuona Trust Gallery in Nairobi, Kenya.

This exhibition is inspired by the informal sector that breathes character into Nairobi’s economy. Built from the opportunistic personality and perseverance of the Jua Kali worker. These artisans often use locally available recycled or found objects to develop their creations.

The artists use this element of Nairobi to describe one’s perceived self-image created from the idea of the Jua Kali philosophy.

The artists have designed an installation combining found objects, recycled material and photography as a motif that represents recreation and the profile of the characters that live within the Jua Kali world. Each portrait describes a personality that has created a surreal self-image adorned with found objects, giving a superhuman feel to the personalities that allow them to fit in to Nairobi’s Jua Kali world.

If you’d like to attend the opening on Thursday, 17th July, doors open at 6pm. Kuona Trust Gallery is located on Likoni Lane off of Denis Pritt Road, Nairobi, Kenya.
