Ghanaian musician dedicates love song to Kenya

ROCKY-DAWUNI

US-based Ghanaian musician Rocky Dawuni will use a peace concert in Nairobi on Thursday to launch and dedicate a love song to the city that he loves.

Rocky, who has toured the US and Europe, wrote the song years back when a visit to Nairobi introduced him to talk about the post election violence.

He will feature in a day-long event dubbed the Chagua Peace Festival, which kicks off at the Uhuru Park at 10am on Thursday.

“When I first came here, everyone I spoke to was talking about this. They were talking about the pain of the violence and their worry of the upcoming poll. I felt that I needed to write a song about Nairobi. A peace song masquerading as a love song,” he told Capital Lifestyle.

“Nairobi is shared by all. It is owned by everybody. So here there is peaceful co-existence, and it should stay that way” he added, calling the city a jewel.

Rocky will launch his song exclusively on Capital in the Morning before he performs it for the first time at the Uhuru Park. He has already shot the video with help from a US film crew and the very able filmmaker Tilo Ponder.

Rocky has worked with Bono of U2 on a track called War/No More Trouble and has shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Jason Mraz and K’Naan.

In 2011, not only did Rocky win Best African Artist at the International Reggae & World Music Awards, but he was also appointed as a Tourism Ambassador and World Music Ambassador for Ghana.

‘Nairobi I Love You’ was shot in several parts of the city including Kibera and has cameo appearances by musician Juliani and industrialist Chris Kirubi.

The Chagua Peace Festival is mainly sponsored by the Kenya Red Cross Society, with support from Gina Din Corporate Communications, Capital Group Limited, Safaricom, Airtel, Orange and several others.
