A usually reserved Malawi is trying to make its presence felt in the African cultural map this year by hosting the Africa Movie Academy Awards Nomination Night in March.

Malawi’s most powerful woman and president Joyce Banda agreed to the fete after an AMAA delegation paid her a visit, led by AMAA founder and chief executive officer, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe.

Tony Anih, the Administrative Secretary of AMAA, says that the event will take three days (March 14-17) and will not only accommodate celebrities from across Africa, but also the Malawian business community and political class.

“The government and people of Malawi are excited about the prospect of having movie icons and other players in the motion picture industry coming to the country for the nominations event,” promised Anih in a statement.

He explained the Nomination Night as an event where films that make it into the 25 categories of the awards are announced ahead of the main ceremony that will be in Lagos in April.

“AMAA is a continental brand… While the award ceremony usually takes place in Nigeria, we always move the nominations event from one country to another. It is our way of promoting the ‘Africanness’ of the award… We have had the nominations previously in Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa”.

Alongside the action, the Africa Film Academy will start a training programme in the first week of March for young Malawians interested in a career in audiovisual media.
