Deadline extended for entries to African ‘Oscars’

The deadline for submitting entries to the AfricaMagic Viewer’s Choice Awards has been extended until next Friday, amid a last minute rush.

AfricaMagic have announced that the deadline has been pushed forward from November 2 to November 9.

The Awards, created to ‘recognise and celebrate African film and TV talent’, are the first of their kind for the continent in a sure sign of an on-coming revolution in the African film industry.

Submissions are being called for from actors, directors, producers, and everyone else who takes part in putting content together whether on screen or behind the scenes.

M-Net Africa Managing Director Biola Alabi explained; “To ensure a methodical and tracked entry process in line with international standards, our primary method of accepting entries is through post or courier.”

Entries however will be accepted at the ongoing DISCOP film and TV market in Johannesburg, South Africa, which winds up on Friday.

Entrants are eligible to present work that was broadcast or exhibited between May last year and April this year.

The languages currently accepted are English, Swahili, Hausa or Yoruba, but this is expected to open up in the years to come.

Winners of the awards will be announced at two separate events in March next year at a ceremony in Lagos.

Awards judge Femi Odugbemi has cautioned entrants to follow the guidelines keenly so that their entries are not ‘invalidated’.

“This is a huge opportunity for all professionals in front and behind the camera… There is potential for the creative industries of Africa to contribute more significantly to the economy of the continent… But to achieve potential we have to raise the game. AMVCA provides the right kind of incentive for our creative industries to get recognition and to improve in quality.”
