Angry Birds creators to attend AfricApps conference

One of the creative minds behind the popular mobile game Angry Birds will chat to mobile app developers at this year’s AfricaCom AfricApps conference in Cape Town South Africa. Peter Vesterbacka from Rovio will also be a contributor in the keynote panel discussing ‘Innovation or Disruption? Debating the Role of New Players in the Digital Ecosystem’ alongside representatives of Google, Amazon, Orange and Alcatel-Lucent.

Some of the key issues to be discovered include; creating discoverable apps, marketing your apps to the African markets, successful monetisation models and choosing the correct payment platform.

The conference will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 13 – 15th November.

Developers will get free entrance to informal presentations and workshops, as well as a Mobile Apps Dragons Den, where the key Venture Capitalists will discuss what they look for from a successful App.

Vesterbacka was named in TIME’s 2011 100 most influential people for Rovio’s success especially with the Angry Birds games. His official title at Rovio is ‘Mighty Eagle, Chief Marketing Officer’ and is in charge of the company’s marketing and brand strategy.

Speaking to technmarketing.com, Vesterbacka said Angry Bird’s success has been a result of a combination of factors.

“Optimized for touch, great characters, everybody loves the birds. And we like to think that we know a thing or two about how to work together with our fans and community too, ie the future of marketing,” said the CMO.

Angry Birds hit the 1 billion download mark in May across Android and Apple’s iOS platforms.
