Celebrity makeup artists discuss holiday beauty bag essentials

Jetting off on holiday but at a loss over which items to squeeze into your bulging beauty bag? Here, world renowned makeup artists Eugenia Weston, Kristofer Buckle, Frances Hathaway and Marietta Carter-Narcisse tell Relaxnews about their holiday cosmetics essentials.

Foundation with SPF
“Protective foundation is the quick way to cover flaws and prevent sun damage,” urges Eugenia Weston, who has worked as a makeup artist for top fashion photographers including Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton. The artist, who created her own line Senna Cosmetics in 1976, says the collection’s Barely Base Sheer Mineral Makeup SPF20 is “the perfect summer foundation and multi-taking product” as you won’t need to pack a separate facial sunscreen. Other popular brands include bareMinerals SPF 15 Original Foundation and MAC’s Select water-based liquid foundation with SPF 15. For ladies looking for something even lighter Weston suggests “a sheer tinted moisturizer with SPF that has a little glow to it” instead.

Waterproof mascara
“Waterproof mascara magnifies the eyes and doesn’t look messy in the heat or humidity,” explains Kristofer Buckle, who has worked with some of the most famous faces in Hollywood, including Charlize Theron, Blake Lively and Jennifer Lopez. Buckle adds that one of his favorite looks for summer 2012 is “very fresh skin with just a wash of a transparent pastel on the eye and a bit of mascara.” There are an array to be found on the high street, with Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara and L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara among the most coveted.

Multi-tasking eyebrow kit
Most of us wear fewer cosmetics on holiday, but even if the rest of your makeup is pared down, Weston says an eyebrow pencil is essential because “brows frame the face and give definition.” The artist recommends her Senna line’s Form-A-Brow Kit for its multi-tasking properties because you can “color and shape your brows, use the colors as eye shadow and liner plus tweeze stray hairs using the stencil as a guide.” Meanwhile, eyebrow guru Shavata has an array of eyebrow shaping products suitable for holiday packing on her website, as do beauty brands such as Bobbi Brown.

On-trend eyeshadow
Vacations are the perfect opportunity to break out of a beauty rut, and for Summer 2012 Frances Hathaway, who has worked on famous faces including Naomi Campbell, thinks women should ditch their trusty shades and attempt to recreate runway looks. “Although gold foil (metallic) was a huge hit for Fendi, this can be applied to real life as well, use your favorite gold shimmer shadow for paired down look of this runway sensation,” she explains. Ladies looking to evoke the shimmering aesthetic should check out Tom Ford’s Spring 2012 Limited Edition Metallics Collection, while other labels including Bobbi Brown, Stila and Smashbox offer party-ready metallics.

Daring lip color
Marietta Carter-Narcisse, who has worked with stars including Jordin Sparks, cites a good lip color as her essential vacation item to smooth lips and maintain a moist pout. “You can get an instant face lift with the proper lip color,” argues the artist, adding that the deeper your tan the more daring you should be. “I love peaches, salmons and oranges with a summer tan. Obviously the intensity would vary depending on the complexion, that is, the darker the complexion, the more intense the color should be,” she says. Celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge is also a fan of orange shades for the summer, and can be seen demonstrating the look in this video: http://youtu.be/cAmzABgXDWo
