Durban fashion: Green and outrageous

For yet another year, fashionistas and the who’s who of South African Society converged at the 2012 Durban July to watch horses, bet money on races and most importantly – strut the most outrageous but gorgeous outfits they could conjure up.

The July, as it is known, is more about fashion and socialites than it is about horses, but since both reek of money and class, who’s complaining?

Before the event, shopping malls were packed with last minute touch ups for the perfect outfit. Men could be seen huddled together, sitting and waiting for their ladies who tried on shoe after shoe.

The event on July 7 saw tens of thousands converge at Greyville and for the fashion social orderlies, it was a massive stage where their catwalks were open to wider scrutiny.

A touch of green and eco-friendly was theme and some young South Africans were awarded for their efforts.

Third year University student Tammy Sturrock won herself the Durban July Young Designer Award, while Bloemfontein designer Tsholofelo Moilopai scooped the hotly contested Fashion Challenge title; which culminated before the main horse race of the day-long event – Race 7.

But the two winners were not the only stars at the event. Capital Lifestyle got a glimpse of some outrageous outfits and suave couples.
