Now that it is world’s AIDS day…

World AIDS day is observed on the first day of December and today marks its 23rd anniversary. World AIDS day was launched in 1988 and is a day that is supposed to champion raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education.

This day is important to remind everyone that HIV is still very much around and that there are still very many things to be done.
The global theme for World AIDS Day from 2011-2015, as selected by the World AIDS Campaign, is? “Getting to Zero” and focuses on the goals of zero new infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths.

UNAIDS estimates about 33.3 million people currently living with HIV. This figure includes 2.5 million children.
In 2009 some 2.6 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 1.8 million died from the virus.

Majority of people with HIV/AIDS live in lower and middle income countries. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.
In the coming months the World AIDS Campaign will be spotlighting a range of Getting to Zero initiatives to help see an end to AIDS related deaths.

Getting to Zero is a must

The global HIV response is at a pivotal moment, where huge strides
forward are at serious risk and current approaches are reaching their
limits.

Only one third of the 15 million people living with HIV in need of lifelong
treatment are receiving it.

New infections continue to outpace the number of people starting
treatment, while the upward trend in resources suffered a serious
downturn this year.

“Zero New HIV Infections”
and “Zero Discrimination” are equally as
likely to spark high impact events from small scale community vigils
to nationwide events using the universally recognized shape of
zeros and the power of light get life and death issues the
attention they deserve.

It is crucial that everyone is able to access affordable life saving quality medicines free the crippling effects of excessive profit taking
